    Tokyo's quake-inspired bicycle boom
    - http://www.reuters.com/resources_v2/flash/video_embed.swf?videoId=230903407 Tokyo commuters turn to bicycles after last year's earthquake transport chaos, with up to five times more cyclists on the streets

    http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/life/two-wheels-better-four-tokyo-645357

Mikael Coville, of Copenhagenize fame, ranks Japan as the world's third greatest cycling nation behind the Netherlands and Denmark. But just what is it about Japan that makes cycling an attractive transport option to millions of people every day? http://muenchenierung.blogspot.com/2012/01/cycling-culture-it-are-people-stupid.html

Guillaume Blanchet, The Man Who Lived On A Bike: Montrealer Pedals Through 382 Days

Montreal streets aren't always known for their friendliness.
But you'd barely guess that the ice or traffic could get tough from artist Guillaume Blanchet's latest video, in which he rides his bicycle through the city for 382 days, washing, cooking, changing, flirting with women and generally living on two wheels as the cityscape whizzes by.

French-born Blancet dedicated the film to his father, Yves Blanchet, who, as is noted in the introduction, is 64 years old and has ridden his bike over 120,000 kilometres. Blanchet wrote in the video's description, "I love being on a bike. It helps me feel free. I get it from my dad. After 382 days spent riding through the streets of Montreal, being sometimes quite cold, sometimes quite hot - and sometines [sic] quite scared, I dedicate this movie to you, Yves Blanchet :-)."

Blanchet, who works as a French copyeditor for advertising firm Bleublancrouge, previously gained attention in 2009 for his stop motion film Laika, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Montreal bar. As he told website Rice Candy at that time: I love to be impressed by things that are technically over my understanding -- like 3D animation. On the other hand, I also love what comes out of simplicity: everyone understands how it’s made. Simplicity in execution has a nice sharing dimension, because people end up realizing that somehow, they could have done it too.

While few people might agree that they too would have felt comfortable taking a snooze while pedalling along, Blanchet's short film is a pretty practical study in the madness of multitasking, with a few fabulous pop culture references thrown in for good luck (we're looking at you, ShamWow). Plus, it gives us a pretty great tour of Montreal's charms, and gives a little something extra to aspire to the next time we plan to take a spin.

Audi Teams with Renovo to Offer Bikes

Auto maker Audi has teamed up with custom bike brand Renovo Hardwood Bicycles to offer a line of high-end belt-drive performance bicycles that are both fashionable and functional.

The so-called “duo” project between Audi and Renovo is one of the more unique partnerships between a bike brand and a car maker. “Audi’s demographic is interested in high quality and high performance,” sad Renovo founder Ken Wheeler. “Renovo’s demographic is very similar.”

Duo was born during a visit to Renovo’s Portland, Oregon, studio last winter. A team of executives from the German auto company spent four days at Renovo, discussing options for custom bikes that would appeal to their customer base. “Audi was looking for bikes that reflected their concept of combining art and function and engineering,” Wheeler said. “But they also wanted practical bikes that their owners and customers could use every day.”

Two bikes in the duo line will feature the new CenterTrack system from Gates Carbon Drive, a grease-free alternative to bike chains that is increasingly popular among urban cyclists and commuter bicyclists due to its low maintenance, cleanliness, strength and modern aesthetic. In addition to the Gates belt drive, duo bikes feature disk brakes and LED lights, carbon fiber components, and wood selected to match the interior of Audi vehicles.

For Wheeler, who founded Renovo after working with wooden boats and as a builder of wooden kit airplanes, the deal with Audi is an opportunity to expose more consumers to the beauty and performance attributes of wood. “Wood is expensive to work with but it’s strong and light,” he says. “It also has great ride quality.” The Renovo website has gotten more hits than ever in the company’s history since Audi announced the duo project. Wheeler says interest in Renovo’s belt drive bikes will likely boom as Audi places duo bikes into some of its 300 dealerships, exposing a vast new audience to wooden bikes and Gates Carbon Drive.

The Duo City retails for $6,530. The Duo Sport (pictured) retails for $7,350.

Audi teams up with Renovo to build exclusive hardwood bikes

Audi announced this week that it has teamed up with Renovo Hardwood Bicycles, the only all-hardwood bike manufacturer in the world, to create the duo — an Audi-inspired bike collection.

The Audi duo line features a monocoque frame made of hardwood, which the automaker says offers the smoothest ride of any bike frame material, thanks to its superior ability to absorb shock and vibration.

Since the weight per cubic inch of wood is about one-fourth the weight of aluminum, the duo is lighter than most bicycle frames, while offering equal stiffness, durability and toughness.

And it’s also recyclable and biodegradable.

Handmade individually at Renovo’s Portland, Ore., studio, the duo’s features include drive train components such as a belt drive, aluminum and carbon fibre components, disk brakes and LED lighting, as well as woods selected to match the look of Audi vehicle interiors.

    World-traveling bicyclist overcomes disabilities - November 15, 2011

The fact that Dejan Zafirov lost one leg and injured the other in a work accident hasn't stopped him from his goal of bicycling around the world.

The Macedonian cyclist rolled into San Francisco on Friday after completing a two-month cross-country ride on his fully loaded bicycle.

He already has toured on his bicycle in South America, Europe, and Asia. His tour across the US was launched to inspire his fellow countrymen and raise money for adaptive sports equipment at home through his Citizens Association Gaia.

Dejan rides his bicycle with a prosthetic right leg to compensate for his above-the-knee amputation. Starting out, he said the prosthetic leg made him totally change his style of bicycling, but he and his body have adapted to the changes.

He wants to share his message of “mobility” with the entire world.

Laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, require that buildings and activities be accessible to people regardless of their handicaps. Dejan says those designs elements are missing in Macedonia's infrastructure.

The same goes with adaptive sports equipment, which is limited to the most basic in his country.

Dejan wants to inspire disabled Macedonians to become more active. He hosts a summer camp for teens — Stars on Earth — in his native country and is raising funds to make prosthetic limbs more available.

The 33-year-old plans to bicycle across six continents in three-year period, covering about 15,000 miles.

His November arrival in San Francisco required an early winter crossing of the Sierra Nevada, which included pedaling through the snow at Lake Tahoe.

Leaving New York City in September, Dejan basically followed the TransAmerica route west to Pueblo, then followed the Route 50 corridor over the Rockies at Monarch Pass and continued through Utah and the “loneliest road in America” in Nevada.

At his blog, Dejan wrote at the finish (translated):

“What a wonderful experience filled with all sorts of experiences, from heavy to magic, from solitude to wonderful relationships. … I feel internally fed.”

The Gaia website has photos and a blog from his travels (see “news”); he has a Facebook page as well.

    Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book - http://www.scribd.com/doc/70289375/Richards-21st-Century-Bicycle-Book

The Bicycle Book also introduced many new cyclists to the world of commuting and bicycle touring and was also an early example of bicycle advocacy. In a section on roadway cycling, commuting, and etiquette, Ballantine firmly stated his view that cyclists, as lawful road users, had an absolute right to share existing motorways, and that the safe travel of all users should take precedence in designing new streets and thoroughfares

Over the years, Richard's Bicycle Book has been through several incarnations such as Richard's New Bicycle Book (1987) and most recently Richard's 21st Century Bicycle Book (2000)...
