Outdoor occupational workers and older age community‐dwellers are
particularly vulnerable to injuries due to outdoor falls in winter.
...
Two‐thirds of slips leading to falls at work, home, and during
leisure activities in the Nordic countries have been estimated to have occurred on pavement or other surfaces covered by ice or snow
...
Gait stabilizing devices for winter, such as those in Figure 1 have been developed to specifically
increase slip resistance under icy conditions.  One such device is the Yaktrax walker which
consists of bands of steel coil that conform to the length and width of shoes and boots

Never run while wearing crampons [1]

In both downhill and sidehill progress, each step is a risk. Every time the hiker lifts the snowshoe to step they have to stand on one twisted ankle. They cannot "dig in" with their heels, and are placing their entire weight on the poorly-designed binding teeth. As the free foot is lifted and moved forward there is the possibility of striking the standing leg, and making the situation worse. Finally, in the downhill mode, there is the possibility of the snowshoe swinging out and forward, moving the platform perpendicular with the snow. When this happens, the step "spikes" the snowshoe tail first into the snow, and the snow forces it forward. A tumble forward, head over heels, is quite possible at this point... http://blog.oplopanax.ca/2010/10/how-to-kill-yourself-snowshoeing/

...direct UVC irradiation may be an effective germicidal agent for whole-room disinfection. However, this method, like chemical disinfection methods, may be hampered by the fact that the bactericidal effect is reduced in the presence of organic materials. Surfaces with visible stains that contain organic matter will always need separate procedures for immediate spot cleaning and disinfection.8

Furthermore, UVC disinfection is not effective in completely shadowed areas, such as bed mattresses, closed bedrails, and lockers. These surfaces still have to be disinfected by other means. Therefore, UVC may not be used alone for disinfection, but it may be a good addition to chemical disinfection, to lower the biological burden of infectious agents in isolation units for high-risk infectious patients.

Although UV light kills microorganisms, it generally has no impact on chlorine, heavy metals or other chemical contaminants. However, these types of pollutants are not life threatening and can be removed with many filtration devices on the market today http://www.photonics.com/Article.aspx?AID=42269

New safety equipment debuted at firefighters convention

Indianapolis - It is billed as the world's largest firefighters convention and it is underway in Indianapolis this week.

30,000 firefighters are in town for training and to look at the latest technology.

At the Vincennes Aviation technology center at the Indianapolis Airport, they are using a plane to simulate a wreck. Down town, Lucas Oil Stadium is filling with fire trucks and heavy equipment and the convention center is being used for training sessions and more trade shows.

One of the products expected to get a lot of attention at the shows is made by a Fort Wayne Company. The Vulcor Flatpack is a new alternative to the old heavy air bottles fire fighters carry on their backs. It's only about an inch thick and weights about a third as much.
Firefighters working in tight spaces with an air bottle on their back having a tough time or impossible to get through, but with the new smaller Flatpack they can get around easier and faster, decreasing the time it might take to reach someone trapped in the smoke and flames.
"Anything we can do to make a firefighter more nimble, more agile and more mobile helps firefighters and potential victims. Imagine going up a ladder and you don't have this unwieldy back that causes tremendous balance problems you are now really in a natural state. You can climb faster, you can get off faster move people on the ladder more effectively, you can go over parapets more easily. It is amazing amount of difference," said Bobby Helton, Fire Department Instructors Conference.

Heavy fire trucks are also going to get a lot of the attention, but they are expensive.
Fire trucks used in Indianapolis and other cities start at $500,000 dollars. The big ladder trucks are even pricier at about $900,000.

With cities cutting spending because of the recession, do they really have the money to up date and replace their aging equipment? According to convention organizers, the answer is yes
"The real cost in any organization is not the equipment, it is the people. It is benefit packages, it is sick leave it is all that, that goes alone with personnel. That is the tough part we are seeing in municipal management. As far as equipment and facilities goes, most communities have done an excellent job," Helton said.
The Indianapolis Fire Department says it always stretches equipment to the limit, but in the last year has purchased 13 new fire trucks.

Firefighting Grenades
The two words seem to be at odds, but the FIT-5 firefighting grenade really does work well in small enclosed spaces, negating the need for firefighters to enter blazing hot infernos in some cases. This amazing little device releases a wispy cloud of potassium carbonate into the air, which disrupts the chemical reaction that causes fire by removing the oxygen from the equation. Once the fire has lost some of its energy, firefighters are able to knock it out much more safely and easily.

If the fire has already broken out through windows or has penetrated the roof and is self-ventilating, powder containment is probably impractical. Only deploy an Ara Pro in a situation such as this to support victim recovery. http://www.arasafety.com/training/safety-considerations.htm At just $997.50 a unit when you buy two or more, it is an ideal addition to every firefighter's toolbox.
