Companies farmers Breeders Basin in Skopje Sixth millennium -  Archaeological Mission Madzahari

The confines of the worlds Aegean and Adriatic, and on the threshold of the East initiator of the first economies of production, Macedonia served as a relay vital to the establishment of an economy Neolithic type in the heart of Europe. This region has played an active role and probably innovator in the operation and management of new subsistence economies, a role that needs to be documented. In an economy such agro-pastoral illustrated the first occupancy levels Anzabegovo site (in the second half of the Seventh millennium), the top Macedonian farmers Breeders appear quickly replace (circa 5800 BCE) a new type of economy, which involves the colonization of new lands, whose funds endorheic basins, by sites such tell (or tumba). This new stage of "néolithisation, where new economic choices and techniques seem to occur while intensify and organize cultural activities on some sites and in particular Madzhari (Skopje), which interests us , Regionally, but also as a means of interaction between regions, close or distant.

The catchment area of Skopje opens naturally on the broad corridor Valley river Vardar (Axios) that meridional trace an area of contact between the valley of the Morava and the Gulf of Thessaloniki. Access to the valley of the Struma (Strymonas) Bulgarian, the other major north-south Macedonian, is effected by the Shtip basin, the valley of the Bregalnitsa and further south along the current Greek border Through the valley of the Strumeshnitsa. In the north-west basin of Skopje, the sharp bend of the river Vardar opens onto the pool of Tetovo, dominated by the Albanian relief.

The site is Madzhari to the east of Skopje, in the old village of Madzhari (Shento), now being annexation to the outer suburbs of Skopje. It is a type tumba, a small tell of 220 meters in diameter (3.8 ha), which has long been held without major interruption during the Sixth millennium BCE. The Museum of Macedonia, headed by Vojslav SANEV, began excavations in the 80s. These excavations have exposed to Level II, structures interpreted as indicative of a sanctuary.

—Results

The first results of the preliminary campaign of 2002

Exploratory campaign in 2002 established baseline data for future investigations. It allowed both a recognition of stratigraphic and sampling sedimentological, and palynological anthracologiques up in successive levels-like exhibition of land and structures first. Meanwhile, Eric and Celine FOUACHE Coussot returned the first elements of the geomorphic environment of the site and conducted many tariérages around and in situ.

A survey was carried out at the top of tumba. Three meters stratified archaeological deposits without disruption Géopédologie major geological or apparent, were exposed. The cuts show strong levels of construction land and wood and massive and multiple structures of combustion. The observation of land, the intricate structures or their destroyed building elements but also the quality of the sediment was allowed to identify four major (I the oldest, IIA, IIB, III and IV). Fours and have burned soil samples for dating stratigraphiées well. Charcoal was collected in a small pit that starts the virgin soil at the base level I date it will, hopefully, the beginning of the occupation of tumba de Madzhari. The virgin soil is a clay-greasy, green and rolled heavily micassée.

All segments produced remains abundant and varied wildlife. A preliminary statistical fragments of pottery does not detect changes, technical or stylistic major; more subtle variations are not excluded: we will cautiously to the summons, for the moment, exposed to levels even "horizon" Archaeological (but the amount of shards fall sharply when reached levels I and II A).

With the first soil appeared the first structures of the most recent Madzhari, an adobe building Oblong which were filed pottery non-cooked. This structure could have worked with a battery of cooking which only the top was exposed for the moment.

Though scarce, lithic materials already offers some "tracks" of interesting research. Some parts are cutting brown obsidian (different from obsidian Greek Milos), which could be a local volcanic glass or obsidian Carpathian. While the sources of flint (including nuclei in secondary position carried by the Vardar near the site) are not lacking, the site quantity of blocks of schist and quartz, aliens lithological immediate area. For now, there is the cutting shale in small plates of a few centimeters in length but also, more remarkably, the tabulation of pieces of quartz identical dimensions. (Specialists lithiciens, absent this year, will be on the ground in 2003 and 2004). Four elements of comprehensive sickle were collected on land.

The equipment in place is still scarce but the quality of the pottery is exceptional complex forms ( "altars"), fragments of crockery-effigies are many on the first floors, the most recent occupation of tumba. A figure-violin clay was found lying on a mud floor, face against land on a circular bleached area (this figure is the first of its kind to light). Note the morphological similarities in the treatment of the face between this figure and the "goddess" of crockery-effigies.

The remarks concerning sediments on which the site is to identify silty clay green and rolled micassées whose low traces of oxidation could testify by a sedimentation settling in a range of water depth, with variations from Lines shores. Redéposition by the runoff of sediment from the bedrock at the bottom of the slope of the spur which is located Skopje is, however, at this stage of investigations, not excluded. And study sédimentologique The geo-archaeological Madzhari will be extended to four other Neolithic sites close to define and characterize the extent of the likely swamp surrounded and they recognize the palaeosol.

—Scientific issue

If the dynamics of the subsistence economy as the recovery of the environment are still used to explore the same for production systems of stone, furniture made of stone or bone, pottery, for conditions for the use of artifacts, their source of production and distribution intra-and inter-regional.

The reconstruction of the environment and the implementation strategy sites:

The current landscape shows a valley bottom fertile land recently "settled" on the site of an ancient lake basin tertaire-Skopje, like all depressions north-east Aegean subject to a then-latent endorheism that the slopes of mountains catch small cultivated land and village elders (currently, the yield Mediterranean influences climate here in the early continental influences).

When observing the topographic distribution of Neolithic sites, taking into account the timing of settlements, there is a small settlement endorheic basins distributed along the Vardar, begins during the second phase of Old Neolithic (circa 5800 BCE) and intensified during the Middle Neolithic (5800 - 5300 BCE). The point is well illustrated by Madzhari, located in plain and whose length of tenure covers both phases. Two types of sites co-exist with the same periods in the basin in Skopje and Kumanovo related basin. The topographic distribution sites shows that the type of sites tell occupy the bottom of the plain while extensive sites prefer the foothills or the reverse of small plates. So there are indications in Macedonia, from the end of Early Neolithic period, to document various ways to occupy the space, built dense and compact, focused and reproduced in time or space loose and open (stratigraphy "horizontal" likely At least partially) more mobile in space and it seems much less busy.

This feature must be clarified because it could involve different strategies for the exploitation of resources, a selective choice of soils cultivation, a «fashion occupation» reported(identified) by an architectural fabric (and social?) and different villagers may be significant in terms economic interaction throughout the region. It would be interesting to establish a possible complementarity of livelihood among the lowland sites, probably installed on the edge of swamp or lake sites and foothills: to the east of Skopje, five Neolithic sites Madzhari which are located in along lowland location describes a circular enclave which could indicate the shores of any marsh or a former lake. No site is listed in the central area of this endorheic basins.

Our research aims:

° investigation of wetland and lake deposits around Madzhari to obtain a geological sequence and pollen in early Holocene, coupled with the investigation, the micro-regional scale, of palaeosol available but also their recovery on a larger scale until one of the foothills (E. FOUACHE, C. Coussot).

° exploration with the objective of locating sources of raw materials (in primary and secondary contexts-river embankment droppings at the base of the foothills) for the stone industry but also for furniture stone and clay pottery (G . Kourtessis-Philippakis and C. Delage, C. Coussot). A lithothèque will be established at the Museum of Macedonia as a reference for any study lithic in the region.

° surface exploration to locate sites will be conducted in different areas of the basin in Skopje, determined in terms of their topography and habitat they move towards the foothills areas-particularly those of the Crna Gora north-east Madzhari site (C. Commenges, D. ZDRAVKOVSKI, E. FOUACHE, C. Coussot)

Finally, while lack of essential data to document the choice to the exploitation of animal species (and the role of savings booster), documentation on crops, cereals and pulses (and wild flora, blankets tree etc) as the species is picked, Macedonia, totally lacking. The data from an extensive search but also the recovery of local natural resources will come document the procedures and changes in agricultural technology and farming but also the subsistence activities which are intensified, such as fishing. The operation gradually resolved in a herd of cattle that marginalize pastoralism, the site seems Anzabego highlight here must be documented and explained if possible as social choice in view of environmental determinism.
«Archeology of a society»

In addition to the research described above, Madzhari offer the opportunity to be presendet(expose) by extensive searches, the architectural fabric villages, at each state(level) of occupation. The documents present interest generally one or two housing units, including the solid wooden architecture and mud and domestic and / or worship (very large homes and platforms battery, silos and perhaps altars) have given the 'Interest to report on the social space. The extensive exhibition of village structures would test the vision, largely consensual, a Neolithic egalitarian society. Madzhari was interpreted as a sanctuary. The hardware worship (or at least the hardware token or prestige represented by figurines, pottery forms and complex technology developed models of houses) has strangely abundant in Macedonia and in particular the Middle Neolithic. The "wealth" exceptional Madzhari equipment, the accumulation of pottery invoice exceptional internal structures (altars? Uncovered in the 80s) tend to reinforce a specialized, at least for the construction searched. The possibility of a "centralization" of some cultural activities and its possible relationship to similar activities in the domestic space is not the slightest interest in the search Madzhari.

To broaden our understanding of space constructed and to illuminate both the technical architecture and dynamics of modes of testimony and destruction of structures, Jacques Leopold BROCHIER undertake analysis of sedimentation antropology; this study will be completed by the formation of ethno-facies sedimentological, from old buildings (built in wood and adobe) preserved in the village of Madzhari.
