AERo

Aero is one of the new design materials available. Aero consists of tightly corrugated anodized aluminum sheets that are flexible and formable.

Crisp, exacting folds characterize each sheet and cast deep shadows that contribute to the dimensionality of Aero.

Snowdrift rug

Out on their own on a stripped floor, or nestled cosily against a carpet; placed under a coffee table, or highlighting a warm spot in front of the fire - beautiful rugs spell comfort and style. They can provide a stylish interior focal point, or give definition to open-plan areas - marking out a living area, for example, away from the kitchen, or pulling together a group of furniture to create a space within a space.

A rug can warm up a cold floor on a winter’s morning or protect a special carpet; and for those who like to stay close to the ground, there’s nothing like a fluffy, plush rug to lie down on - the deeper the pile, the better. But contemporary rugs fulfil much more than these utilitarian roles: unusual, modern designer rugs are capable of taking pride of place as a room’s defining piece. And if they won’t fit on the floor, they can just as easily take to the wall.

Digital Dawn

Material-Plastics

Based in London Rachel Wingfield and Mathias Gmachl set up Loop.pH to create and develop new and reactive surfaces and structures and have worked on architectural and fashion commissions to product design. They conduct an extensive range of research activities and collaborate with industry and multi-disciplinary groups.

Digital Dawn is their reactive window blind with a surface that is in constant flux, growing in luminosity in response to its surroundings. It digitally emulates the process of photosynthesis using printed electroluminescent technology. the darker a space becomes the brighter the blind will glow maintaining a balance in luminosity. A natural, botanical environment appears to grow and evolve on the window lamp.

Engineered Bacteria Can Fill Cracks In Aging Concrete

Researchers at the University of Newcastle in the UK have created a new kind of concrete glue that can patch up the cracks in concrete structures, restoring buildings that have been damaged by seismic events or deteriorated over time. But the glue isn’t an adhesive or some kind of synthetic material; the researchers have custom-designed a bacteria to burrow deep into the cracks in concrete where they produce a mix of calcium carbonate and a special bacteria glue that hardens to the same strength of the surrounding concreate.

'Crack-Proof' Concrete Could Lead to Longer-Lasting Roads

A new kind of concrete made using nanotechnology is resistant to cracks and could be used to create roads that last for 100 years instead of 20, scientists say.

Engineer Surendra Shah of Northwestern University in Illinois and his team are adapting high-tech methods to improve a low-tech substance by infusing concrete with carbon nanotubes – strong, flexible pipe-like arrangements of carbon atoms too small to be seen by most microscopes.

QuaDror: A New Structural System

QuaDror uses diagonal framing members to carry gravity loads while providing good resistance to lateral loads. Compelling animations on the QuaDror website allow viewers to witness planes of simple flat materials quickly transforming into elegant structures.QuaDror’s multi-scalar application is an advantage, allowing the joint to be applied in small models, buildings, and bridges alike. Given its rapid assembly and light weight, it may also be utilized in disaster recovery housing. Perhaps the system’s greatest contribution is the convincing demonstration that form and performance are mutually beneficial.

Aerogel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel

Aerogel holds 15 entries in the Guinness Book of Records, more than any other material. Sometimes called “frozen smoke”, aerogel is made by the supercritical drying of liquid gels of alumina, chromia, tin oxide, or carbon. It’s 99.8% empty space, which makes it look semi-transparent. Aerogel is a fantastic insulator — if you had a shield of aerogel, you could easily defend yourself from a flamethrower. It stops cold, it stops heat. You could build a warm dome on the Moon. Aerogels have unbelievable surface area in their internal fractal structures — cubes of aerogel just an inch on a side may have an internal surface area equivalent to a football field. Despite its low density, aerogel has been looked into as a component of military armor because of its insulating properties.

Two companies currently have a commercial product available – Aspen Aerogel and Thermoblok. Aspen Aerogel offers a roll of the material in 0.2 or 0.4 in thicknesses and 57 inches wide. Thermoblok has 1-1/2″ wide strips, which are used to cover framing studs and help prevent thermal bridging and costs about $1.99/ft. [3]

Many people ask if there are any hazards associated with handling silica aerogel. Working with aerogel with your bare hands can have a slight desiccating effect on the skin. This is due to the absorbance of moisture and oils from the skin into the pores of the aerogel. This is more of a nuisance than a hazard and can be avoided by wearing gloves. Cutting and shaping aerogels usually produces a cloud of fine dust. The particles of aerogel in the dust are smooth and round and, therefore, are not considered to be a laceration hazard (as asbestos is). Nevertheless, it is a good precaution to work in a fume hood or wear a good respirator to avoid inhalation of the aerogel dust. http://eetd.lbl.gov/ecs/aerogels/sa-working.html

One of the advantages offered by Novec 1230 fluid’s high boiling point is that it presents very low vapour pressures, enabling it to be transported in lightweight totes or drums as opposed to steel pressurised containers. This allows Novec 1230 fluid to be readily air freighted and as both initial filling and recharging operations are possible by simply pouring the fluid into containers, prior to super-pressurising, the filling operation is far simpler than with traditional high pressure gases.
