This ranking is not a ranking of importance, nor about influence or even economy. It's about connectivity and international relations.

"The results are based upon the office networks of 175 advanced producer service firms in 707 cities."

So they have a list of 175 firms. All offering what they call advanced services. Mainly they include accounting firms, advertising firms, law firms, banking/finance, insurance etc.
Then they look at where does these firms have their main HQ. Where are the regional HQ located. Where are national HQ located. And where do they have local offices. They give each city a score of 4 point for each main HQ. 3 points for each regional HQ. 2 points for each national HQ. And 1 point for a local office. Then they add all points together an get a score for that city.

So if you have many regional HQs like Luxembourg, you get a high score. While if you're mainly left with some local offices like Osaka, then you score bad.

In general most capital cities does well on this ranking because they're prone to have many national HQs of foreign companies.

But like all rankings, this one has its flaws as well. For instance, the reason why Stockholm score so much better than their other Scandinavian neighbours is the fact that the 175 firms includes two Swedish companies with their main HQ in Stockholm. But doesn't include any Danish, Norwegian or Finish companies.

The have 75 firms within financial services.
And then 25 each within accounting, advertising, law and management consultancy. That makes 175 in total.

I don't know whether they used the same firms for this ranking. But in the previous 2012-ranking the firms included was these. I'm pretty sure they've used most of the same firms this time as well. But some of them have been merged and some even split. So the list has to be a bit different this time.

Took a look into where the HQs are as well. Couldn't find all of them. Some have shared HQs, and some even operate without an HQ. In such cases I've picked the largest office. New York comes up on top with 35 HQs. London with 33, Chicago with 11, Paris with 7, Tokyo and Boston with 6, Beijing with 5, and Atlanta and San Francisco with 4.
