I know the "official" estimate of the population of Skopje is at around 550,000.  Is that accurate?  What would be a more realistic number?  I'm asking this because I know the government estimates the official population of Tetovo and its surroundings to be at around 75,000, but when I was there a few years ago I spoke with many people who said a more realistic estimate would be at around 100,000.

Thanks!

Although I don't think we can agree on a precise estimate, it is crucial to first diferentiate between the categories of:

- the city proper
- the metro area
- the politically imposed, irrational wider administrative area

in Skopje officially there are 550.000 people but unofficially the number is 700.000 cause there are many people as seasonal workers or parttime students abroad, in this number can fall also people with unregulated or illegal dwell.

I am really curious how much will shrink our population after eu visa liberalisation! 100k? 200K? or more? http://www.build.com.mk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=753&PID=50471#50471 I am not sure if we are ready for this step in to eu integration, not with nowdays standard, it would be big temptation for most of young unemployed population!

Visa regime is such a synthetic unnatural stuff. And it deffinettly should be taken aside. I don't think there would be such a massive depopulation. I assure you that it won't be the big temptation, why should it be?! Even if there is some small wave of depopulation it would generate an opposite effect the next few years.

A big percent of the people think that it is a fully liberalisation, but it isn't. Even entering the shengen zone won't caouse that much people to go outside. If someone is so much decided to go, he would have gone till now.

Anyway, it won't be even a bit similar like it was with Bulgaria od Romania.

It's interesting you bring up the effect visa liberalization will have on the population.  I can see people leaving for other countries, but I agree with lslcrew that it won't be as much of a drastic shift of population as when Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU.  As he stated, if people were so bent on leaving Skopje, or Macedonia in general, they would have gone already.

wow 2015 table 2, tho it was just legislative norm so anyone could even transit through this land ... Figure 2. Responses to the Question “What Do You Think about Refugees Coming to Live and Work in Your City? Is It Good or Bad for Your Economy?” by Nationality, 2016

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/outsourcing-migration-management-western-balkans-europes-refugee-crisis

is there any estimation how deep we can go at demographic change through syrian immigrants ntegration, Croatia as eu-member officialy stated that it would acomodate legaly only 140 refugees, while in Macedonia unnoficialy we are ready for thousands, but stil the government is not transparent enough about the number
first of all we need finnaly to realise the long waited Census, but should be real/precise coz we are small country, so we can push for eu directives like massive integration of war refugees, which is debatable, are we aware of the risks if we use the last model for administration of Census

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census#Census_and_development

at last could we publicly monitor these stats through some gis tool that would be updated regularly by the Ministry of Interior Affairs
