All,

I think it is a good time to open a thread in the English subset forum on the development of the logistics industry in Macedonia, as more foreign members are beginning to ask questions regarding investments in the country.  As we all know, Macedonia sits on a major corridor that is very important for the transportation of goods in the region and, more generally, to the entire European continent.  Being such a crucial link in the European transport network, it is inevitable that Macedonia will eventually become a major hub of logistics, as the emerging markets of Eastern Europe are rapidly developing and becoming major world competitors.

Many confuse the term logistics to simply mean "transportation", but the actual term encompasses a larger definition.

Logistics: the management of the flow of goods, information and other resources, including energy and people, between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet the requirements of consumers.

Let's post any questions, comments, and ideas regarding the logistics industry in Macedonia in this thread, as this is one of key areas of growth as the Macedonian economy develops.

Gebrüder Weiss Opens in Macedonia

With the opening of the new location in Skopje, the logistics provider guarantees a seamless transport service from and to the Balkan region.
Since 12 October 2009, Gebrüder Weiss has its own office in Macedonia. In Ilinden, near Skopje, six employees are initially handling day-to-day operations. Thomas Moser, Regional Manager Southeast Europe: "This step enables us to offer our existing customers consistent quality and an efficient service from and to Macedonia. Also, our position as an independent operator allows us to establish our GW services more easily on the market."
GW Macedonia is part of the country organisation in Sofia. One month after starting operations, services will include four transports per week from Sofia as well as two connections from Vienna. Marieta Grigorova, National Director Bulgaria: "We have found highly motivated employees who are all from this sector and will undoubtedly quickly adjust to working within the GW Group. "Without the outstanding commitment of our national director Saso Dimoski, our entry into the market would not have been realised so quickly." With the start of operations, GW Macedonia provided customs clearing and distribution services to well-known customers such as HP, Daikin, Grundfoss and Bosch.
Moser sees strong development potential for Macedonia particularly in distribution and procurement from and to Western Europe. The regional manager is of the opinion that warehouse logistics and logistics solutions will increase in importance with the influx of countries from the west. Medium-term plans now include expanding the range of services and launching a proprietary logistics system.

The Gebrüder Weiss Group
The Gebrüder Weiss Group, with headquarters in Lauterach (Vorarlberg), has a total of more than 4,500 employees at 137 locations worldwide. GW is represented in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia. Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania and the Ukraine. The logistics company achieved a turnover of 985 million euros in the financial year 2008.

pbanks, I am not yet involved.  It's a very enticing industry to be a part of, especially in Macedonia where the opportunities are plentiful.

La Linea, Schmitz Cargobull is a UK-based developer of trailer systems for commercial transport.  They build trailers of all sizes to latch onto the back of semi-trucks.  The company has been a major player in Western Europe and is now aggressively expanding into Eastern Europe.  I would say they will definitely be a large player in the Macedonian transport industry within the next 2-5 years, as their expansion strategy comes to fruition.

pbanks, I was hoping to create a source of information by use of this thread for those foreign investors who are looking to invest in the logistics industry in Macedonia.  As we all know, this forum is expanding quickly and it will turn out to be a very important source of information for outside investors.

Any and all information regarding logistics in MK would be greatly appreciated in this thread!

Cheers
