Kaymaklı(Cappadocia)

http://www.fractalarchitecture.com/ - Fractal Architecture (Green Architecture)

Fractal Architecture: Design for Sustainability fills the gap between concepts of sustainability and the practice of environmental design. It is based on the assumption that sustainability and environmental design are not just industrial era (Modernist) design in green clothing, but a whole new direction with its own philosophy, techniques and expression. While this book is radical in the amount of change it calls for in environmental design professions and practice, it is conservative in emphasizing the traditional concerns of designers with geometry, history and aesthetics. Great effort has been made to integrate the text and graphics of this book in the spirit of holism inherent in sustainability.
Ken Haggard is an architect with San Luis Sustainability Group, a local architecture firm that specializes in fractal planning and green architecture.
He will focus on definitions, illustrations and examples of sustainable design as well as integrated design scales, site design responding to uniqueness of site, passive solar heating and cooling with building design; natural lighting; green materials; economic implications; triple bottom line accounting; design concepts and details.

http://www.isocarp.net/Data/case_studies/985.pdf - Introducing sustainability in contextual visioning - Elin Nan

Plantwall from http://www.greenfortune.com - Green Fortune is a new way of integrating greenery in public spaces. This vertical application of greenery provides a powerful impact on the envirnonment where it is built. It is almost like being outside inside. Plantwall can be varied both in size and shape. Depending on the size of the wall and the impact you want to create the choice of plants can be adjusted. It is possible to create a sophisticated wall that keeps its look over time, as well as a wild, heavily growing wall. Plantwall makes it possible to have lots of greenery without losing floor space. Besides the impression of beauty, plants also provides oxygen and humidity to improve the air quality. Some plants even have air cleaning properties. The integrated drip irrigation system makes the watering very smooth. Unlikely of what you may think, the wall does not spread very much moist thanks to the textile materials used. This makes it possible to use plantwall in places you may think are too sensitive for a project like this. Via the drip irrigation system, also fertilizer is distributed inside the four-layer textile of the wall. This process is programmed by us and automatically controlled. Each new plantwall project can be tailor made to suit different demands. We also offer a one year guarantee and service agreement for each plantwall. You are welcome with your requests.<P align="left">I love the idea of creating walls into living art. A client of our did this at a major fashion event we did in New York in 2005 (see picture below). It makes such a bold statement! Doing it using greenery could be a lot more cost effective. And the fragrance would be lovely [ http://www.greenfortune.com/plantwall.php - 1 ]

 ORGANIC GRASS FURNITURE

Grass Couches Hit The Streets Of San Francisco

The Grass Armchair and Grass Sofa are very easy to create. You will need some soil (240 litres in case of the Grass Armchair), to fill in the frame. Then you will need to spread grass seeds over the soil, press them in and put water on the soil.

After the grass has reached 10cm, cut it down, and n0w you have a really nice green couch or armchair.

You'll have to maintain it regularly if you want to avoid sitting in an overgrown mess. Remember, with all the maintenance, consider using a non-pollutant mower, and minimize your water usage.

I guess you will need to cover the living furniture before you sit on it because it could have dirt.

Tokujin Yoshioka’s chair made from growing natural crystals will headline the exhibition Second Nature opening on the 17th in Tokyo this month. The Venus chair builds on his earlier work such as Honey-pop (2001) which used a honeycombed paper structure to obtain it’s strength and the Pane chair (2006) made of a translucent spongy material called polyester elastomer. The Venus chair is grown in a tank, the production process half controlled by Yoshioka and half left up to nature.

This gemstones are semi-precious stones, they are pieces of attractive minerals, which are cut and polished. Because these fine gems don’t naturally lend themselves to standard slab dimensions, there is special technique that lets piece them together into a durable mosaic like no other. Translucent surfaces (light-transmitting surfaces) in our Gem Surfaces are available.

All Gemsurfaces are offered on this ultra light - weight backing. Applications include walls, ceilings, panel, yachts, airplanes, and elevators or anyplace where weight is a factor. This slab weighs 75% less than granite of equivalent size!

http://io9.com/5014070/is-stay+green-grass-the-artists-medium-of-the-future - Is "Stay-Green Grass" The Artist's Medium Of The Future?

I was already excited about Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey's grass photographs — because who doesn't love photographs developed using the light-sensitive properties of seedling grass instead of photo paper? — but then I found out they were using special long-lasting genetically modified grass as well. Which makes the pics a whole other category of bio-art, as well as a signpost to the way we may use living matter (instead of dead trees) to reproduce images physically in the future. The Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research in Wales http://itotd.com/articles/252/grass-photographs/ - developed a special strain of stay-green grass that can retain images for years, instead of weeks. A few more of my favorite grass photos below the fold.

http://www.alternativephotography.com/process_forgotten.html - Chlorophyll prints
Binh Dahns photosynthesis process. Binh says:
One summer, I was motivated to experiment with photosynthesis and its pigments after watching the lawn change color due to a water hose that was placed on it. Soon after that observation, I was making chlorophyll prints. Photosynthesis takes place in plants as carbon dioxide, water, and light energy is converted to sugars and oxygen. Photosynthesis is the main route by which free energy in the environment is made available to the living world. In my work, photosynthesis is used to record images onto leaves. The leaves are then cast in resin, like biological samples for scientific studies. The images were made into negatives. Then exposed onto living leaves, by placing the negatives onto the leaf, and placing that into a contact printing frame. The image formation was all due to chlorophyll, light, carbon dioxide, and water: the life source of plants and, consequently the Earth. This process deals with the idea of elemental transmigration: the decomposition and composition of matter into other forms.

http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/07/09/grass-art-displays-at-wimbledon/ - GRASS ART AT WIMBLEDON: Photos Printed on Grass!

Grass Art takes center court in a new kind of art installation. UK artists, Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey used grass as a photographic paper by projecting a black and white image on it while growing in a dark room.
This installation is Ackroyd and Harvey’s first commercial installation, sponsored by HSBC for the Tennis Championships. The three people featured are Tara Moore, who is competing in the qualifying tournament; Eddie Seaward, the head groundsman at Wimbledon for the last 15 years; and Lizzie May, a coach for the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.
Ackroyd and Harvey first discovered this technique after finishing an installation consisting of a living grass indoor wall. They had a ladder propped against the grass for some time and after removing the ladder they noticed discoloration in a ladder shape. After experimenting with different ways of enhancing this effect, they settled on a method to project a negative image onto the grass. From biology class, you’ll remember that grass needs light in order to produce chlorophyll, which makes it green. The more light it receives, the more green, while the less light it receives, the more yellow the grass is.
The picture above is the image projected onto the grass panels in order to achieve the affect of the finished picture. Typically, a grass panel needs a little over a week of exposure at 12 hours per day. Unfortunately, the images don’t last for too long without continued maintenance. Once exposed to natural light, the grass begins to grow more evenly and the images fade away.

While green roofs may be universally accepted as wonderfully sustainable landscapes for a myriad reasons, the thought of installing one atop your own home may nevertheless seem daunting, expensive, and difficult to maintain. But the folks from Toyota Roof Gardens (a subsidiary of the Prius-creating car company) have solved your green roof installation qualms with a tile-based system that’s as easy as laying down carpet. The TM9 self-watering turf tiles measure 20 inches square, and connect directly to irrigation systems, making them entirely self-watering. And at a slim 2 inches thick, the tiles lightweight and do not require any additional structural upgrading to your existing roof, this results in a reduced roof load compared to other types of green roof systems that contain a thicker soil layer. At only $43 per tile, the TM9 system provides a modular, easy-to-install, cost-effective option for green-minded homeowners, for  that price they're still expensive, but prices would of course drop if demand were to increase,  although this price is still a bargain in terms of reduced installation and maintenance costs, as well as a cost savings if the building’s roof doesn’t need any structural upgrading to account for the increased weight of a conventional green roof. In terms of maintenance, the tiles need only be cut once a year, thanks to a special breed of Korean velvet grass. And of course, like all green roofs, you’ll rest easy knowing that your easy installation is providing a natural cooling effect, thermal insulation, and a little extra flora in your home environment.

This system, as with all green roofs, provides a natural cooling effect as well as excellent thermal insulation for a building. Green roofs can also remove carbon dioxide from the air and supply oxygen, and are an excellent addition to any flat-roofed building. The TM9 turf mat would be an easy way to add a green roof to almost any building. It might even be possible to install the system inside, to make living carpet.

Namba Parks is  place where you’ll spend half your time shopping and the other half admiring the design. It stands where Osaka’s baseball stadium used to be until 2003, and consists of a 30-floor skyscraper, Parks Tower, and 120-tenant shopping mall which includes many restaurants and a cinema. The eight floors of terraced gardens, boutique stores, big brands and trendy dining have been an instant hit in shopping-mad Osaka. In addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street, welcoming passers-by to enjoy its groves of trees, clusters of rocks, cliffs, lawn, streams, waterfalls, ponds and outdoor terraces.

http://agreenroof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Green-Living-Roof-Panel-and-Protected-Roof-Membrane-_PRM_.pdf - ANATOMY OF A GREEN ROOF: A modern green roof requires eight functional layers:

sturdy roof structure: Green roofs must typically support 25 to 100 pounds more load per square foot than conventional flat roofs. New roofs, whether made of wood, steel, or concrete, can be designed to support green roofs at minimal additional expense. Existing roofs almost always require costly structural reinforcing.

reliable waterproofing membrane: Leaks in green roofs can be very difficult to identify, and repairs or replacement can be expensive. For a long, maintenance-free life, green roof waterproofing must be sufficiently elastic to withstand building movement, must withstand ponded water, must be non-biodegradable, and must be resistant to root penetration. Some rubber and plastic sheet-applied and liquid-applied membranes meet these criteria but most asphalt products do not.

root-barrier/ponding membrane: If the primary waterproofing system is not resistant to root penetration, it can be covered with a secondary root-barrier membrane. Secondary membranes are also used with some green roof systems where water is intentionally ponded so that the primary waterproofing membrane still drains.

tough protection fabric: A synthetic fabric protects the waterproofing or root barrier/ponding membrane from mechanical damage during construction and roof maintenance. Protection fabrics typically weigh 500 to 900 grams per square meter (15 -27 ounces per square yard). Fabrics with enhanced water storage and capillarity are preferred for some green roof systems.

http://www.conservationtechnology.com/greenroof_systems.html - water-storing drainage layer: It is desirable to store water in green roofs to help plants survive through periods of dry weather. However, the dry-climate plants that thrive on green roofs will not survive unless excess water is rapidly drained from the plant root zone. The optimal combination of water storage and rapid drainage can be provided by several water-storing drainage products including well-graded granular inorganic media, dimpled plastic sheets, and ribbed fabric laminates.

non-clogging separation fabric: For the water storage and drainage layer to function properly, it must be kept free of soil. A synthetic soil separation fabric serves this function, but the fabric must have a structure that resists clogging from fine soil particles such as silts and clays.

engineered soil: Green roof soil is not ordinary soil. It must be lightweight, have good water storage characteristics, have a low organic content, have suitable chemical parameters, and have a good distribution of particle sizes.

appropriate plants: Green roof plants must survive in the green roof environment which if often hot and dry. Thin green roofs usually require sedums and herbs, whereas thicker green roofs can often accommodate a wide range of native plants.

Plant Options

Kenneth Yeang explains  that the planst are utmost  important element of  bioclimatic architecture.  Plantings shoult not just travel horizontally, but also vertically to  generate oxygen and help cool the building down http://www.yangsquare.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/mesiniaga_presentation.jpg - http://www.yangsquare.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/mesiniaga_presentation.jpg

Completed in 1992, this building was a precursor to what we call “green buildings” today. Designed as a headquarters for IBM, the building applies architect Ken Yeang’s bioclimatic designs with both internal and external features to create a low-energy building ideal for a tropical climate. Plantings spiral up the façade and into the skycourts from a three-story-high planted mound. Planting can also be found amongst the triple-height recessed terraces in the upper reaches of the building. These atriums allow natural ventilation with cool air, and the vegetation enhances shade and increases the oxygen supply [ http://www.solaripedia.com/13/302/3410/menara_mesiniaga_diagrams.html - 3 ]

“Here are a few opportunities in green architecture that we think are exciting for incorporating biomimicry:

1) Ecological Performance Standards (EPS). What if a community provided the same ecosystem services as the native habitat? We can study the native habitat, determine some standards that we want to meet, standards like the amount of carbon sequestered, the amount of sunlight reflected, the amount of water captured from rain. Then we can study the local organisms to learn how they have adapted and how they contribute to the ecosystem services. With that knowledge, we can design our buildings, landscapes, and hardscapes to do their share. This type of thinking is just unfolding now, and examples of implementation should be readily available in the next few years.

2) Novel materials like Calera cement or PureBond are revolutionizing how materials are made (process). These products have shown they can be sustainably produced and lower CO2 or toxic emissions common in buildings. Some of these materials are already on the market, like PureBond or Lotus technology for windows, but they typically take anywhere from 5-20 years to bring to market. But when they do hit, they make a big impact. Keep your eyes peeled for new types of adhesives, and “tough” materials that use local processing in the next few years.

3) I’m also looking forward to a time when buildings harvest their energy from the sun or wind. With the innovations taking place thanks to looking to nature for inspiration, we’re getting more efficient and easier to solar cells and wind turbines that don’t require high, steady winds.
There, I limited myself to three of the most promising innovations. There are a lot still that nature can teach us and more and more people are doing what we call “quieting our cleverness” and taking the time to observe and learn.”

So far only three buildings in the world have attained Living Building certification, in part because a structure's performance must be measured for a full year to establish its bona fides.
...
To be certified as a Living Building, a structure must meet all of the following requirements.

1.Site: The location will support a pedestrian-, bicycle-, and transit-friendly lifestyle.
2.Water: Rainwater will be collected on the roof, stored in an underground cistern and used throughout the building.
3.Energy: A solar array will generate as much electricity as the building uses.
4.Health: The building will promote health for its occupants, with inviting stairways, operable windows and features to promote walking and resource sharing.
5.Materials: The building will not contain any “Red List” hazardous materials, including PVC, cadmium, lead, mercury and hormone-mimicking substances, all of which are commonly found in building components.
6.Equity: Unlike many office buildings, large operable windows will offer fresh air and daylight to all the people who work in the Cacscadia Center. The goals of Seattle’s Community High Road Agreement will guide selection of the construction team.
7.Beauty: Stunning architecture, an innovative photovoltaic array, a green roof and other native plantings, large structural timbers and a revitalized neighboring pocket park will help beautify the surrounding streetscape.

Chris Reed, principal and founder of http://www.stoss.net/ - Stoss-LU and lecturer at Harvard, is interviewed in Places journal, part of Design Observer. Kudos to Mr. Reed for elucidating the need for entrepreneurial innovation within the design disciplines and at the intersection of landscape architecture and urbanism. In the spirit of optimism, he remarks that perhaps today’s economic conditions are a good thing: “I think the current strain on resources actually spurs innovation,”

Landscape Optimism: An Interview with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-iWpfNRTNA - Chris Reed
...
it's important that landscape architects and urban designers provide leadership. We can't simply wait around for clients or patrons to invent projects for us. We need to take a more proactive, entrepreneurial role in showing potential clients the extraordinary range of possible projects and the various tools that will help realize them. We need to break down traditional disciplinary distinctions and professional versus academic divides. And we also need to tap into broad networks of colleagues – such as applied ecologists, housing specialists, anthropologists, community organizers, economic advisors, local foundation officers and management consultants.
...
so-called green infrastructures (such as rain gardens and infiltration meadows, which were first developed and implemented in Europe) have gained acceptance as best practices across the United States and around the world
...
innovations in implementation techniques, or questions raised by practice on complex sites, can be fed back into academia for further testing, refinement and reformulation
...
these more challenging questions, which are being posed by real-world issues of human habitation and global climate change, require a new breed of professional designer — more project coordinator, choreographer, or curator, perhaps — who can nimbly move across disciplinary silos and academic versus professional distinctions. Our new role is and should be not only designer but also entrepreneur, political stage-setter and planner, drawing on the deep knowledge of allied professionals and academics in diverse fields to develop synthetic and flexible schemes for metropolitan environments.
Within this expanded context, landscape architects are emerging as cultural leaders; in part this is because our field already deals with complexity at very large scales, with details at very small scales, and with time and change in both the short and long run. We also accept uncertainty as part of the life of a project — landscapes are beyond our full control. Cities and metropolitan regions — among the most complex of human inventions — require this mix of big, strategic thinking and tactical, on-the-ground agility. http://www.amazon.com/Landscape-Infrastructure-Case-Studies-SWA/dp/3034605935 - Landscape Infrastructure: Case Studies by SWA - Redefining how we approach design

"INFRASTRUCTURE, as we know it, no longer belongs in the exclusive realm of engineers and transportation planners. In the context of our rapidly changing cities and towns, infrastructure is experiencing a paradigm shift where multiple-use programming and the integration of latent ecologies is a primary consideration. Defining contemporary infrastructure requires a multi-disciplinary team of landscape architects, engineers, architects and planners to fully realize the benefits to our cultural and natural systems."

...

"The role of public infrastructure is changing. As large, contiguous systems, these corridors are networked across a vast scale of public and private lands. [...] The primary aim of this book is to question the ongoing viability of single-purpose corridors by proposing that a multifunctional approach is more in tune with contemporary society."

...

"The authors' intention is clear: ...to question the ongoing viability of these single-purpose corridors by proposing that a multifunctional approach is more in tune with contemporary society."

...

"Infrastructure is a connective tissue that brings together disparate elements, instilling cohesion and purpose"

The concept of "landscape infrastructure" plays an important role in approach towards large scale territorial planning and design projects, thus comprehends the impacts of landscape infrastructure socially, spatially and more importanly economically in deriving strategies to articulate a more adaptable and sustainable system of planning and design... James Corner is a Landscape Architect and theorist with numerous works to his credit which explore the contemporary meaning of architectural landscaping, with a focus on "developing innovative approaches toward landscape architectural design and urbanism." His designs of note include Fresh Kills Park on Staten Island and the High Line in Manhattan, both in New York City.

James Corner was the first landscape architect to receive many of the awards that he has won. In 1996, Corner received the G. Holmes Perkins Award for "distinguished and innovative teachings and methods of instruction in design". The following year, in 1997, he was the first recipient of the Jens Jensen Professorship in Landscape Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Architecture and in 2000 he was the second landscape architect, after Achva Benzinberg Stein, to be chosen for the Daimler-Chrysler Award, which recognizes and promotes innovative design.

(NE)ODRŽIVO „2D“ PLANIRANjE STRUKTURA URBANOG I PREDEONOG
PEJZAŽA U USLOVIMA KLIMATSKIH PROMENA
Velimir Lj. Ćerimović .......................................................137

Često bez ekološke odgovornosti i mere imperativno se stvaraju super i
pseudostrukture, bez obzira koliko se time narušava životna sredina,
stvara bolje društvo, bolja mreža gradova ili bolji čovek. Ipak, moderna
arhitektura još nije stvorila bolje gradove, a urbano planiranje ograničilo
veka. Medjutim, zbog oskudnosti raspoloživog prostora, nagomilanih
negativnih efekata razvoja, neracionalne eksploatacije zemljišnih resursa,
sve potrebnija je transformacija, rekompozicija i redefinicija dosad
neodrživih sistemskih aktivnosti prema gradjenoj i životnoj sredini. Ipak,
takve dobre namere uveliko ugrožava „2D“ terminologija, moćni
investitorski urbanizam i nadmoćna korporatokratija, čiji profiterski
interesi ignorišu smisao urbanog kontinuiteta, ekoreciprociteta i održivog
opstanka i razvoja, jer sve arogantnije provociraju kataklizmičnu „tačku
preokreta“ i put bez povratka.
Tu se posebno nadovezuje i problem razumevanja, vrednovanja i
svrstavanja marginalizovanih, obezvredjenih i nepostojećih pejzažno
gradjenih fizičkih („3D“) struktura i njihove ravnoteže u odnosu sa
čovekom, visoko i nisko gradjenim celinama i volumenima. Tome i te kako
doprinosi dominacija prevazisene „2D“ terminologije i neodrživo
poništavanje treće dimenzije struktura, objekata i artefakta
parkovnourbanog graditeljstva, stvaralaštva, kulture, umetnosti i nasledja,

[tube]h0sBgFNDDJ8[/tube]

Mythical Underpinnings: A fundamental problem with the "new urbanist" formula is that most of the facts and assumptions on which it is based are patently false 1. There is a strong relationship between urban sprawl and air pollution --- but not the one the new urbanists suggest. In the United States, air pollution tends to increase with population density.2. Similarly, traffic congestion tends to be worse in higher density urban areas3. Work trip travel times have decreased since 1969.4. Agricultural land is not being lost to urbanization. Since 1950, increased agricultural productivity has caused agricultural land to be taken out of production at a much greater rate than that of urbanization. It can be expected that the results of "new urbanist" or smart growth policies will be the opposite of what is promised: more serious traffic congestion, increased air pollution and more time spent commuting to work. http://www.demographia.com/newurban.htm - http://www.demographia.com/newurban.htm

The Standard Model of Urbanism and How to Argue Over It: Part One of a Review of Landscape Urbanism and Its DiscontentsFor about the same half-century during which physicists have been developing their "standard models" of both elementary particles and cosmology, urban designers, architects, planners, historians and others (I'll call them all "urbanists") have been developing their standard model of how cities work and how they should be built. Ever since the radical urban plans of the modernists came under attack half a century ago by the likes of Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs, and Robert Venturi, urbanists have come to agree that conventional suburban development is bad, and cities are good when uses are mixed and people can walk around and bump into each other, when people of all demographics have access to urban benefits, when resources are used sustainably, and when public spaces are plentiful and protected. The fact that sentiments along these lines are common currency across the urbanist spectrum has not stopped bands of urbanists with different strategies and emphasizing different parts of the model from arguing over differences that to outsiders seem subtle at best. It would be easy, then, to characterize the book under review here, Landscape Urbanism and its Discontents: Dissimulating the Sustainable City, edited by Andrés Duany and Emily Talen, as simply another less-than-edifying salvo in the continuing war between those urbanists known as New Urbanists and their detractors and those from whom they detract. After all, the book is without apology written by and for New Urbanists about a movement, Landscape Urbanism, whose principal theorist, Harvard professor Charles Waldheim, has explicitly identified his movement as important because it can be a counter to New Urbanism. Yet if you can get beyond the contentiousness, the writers of the essays in the book, or many of them, have important things to say.To begin with, many of the essayists in the book, including New Urbanist co-founder Andrés Duany in his introduction, focus on a fundamental dispute in how people view the city. Simply put, does the unbuilt world of nature structure the city, or does the city structure itself, and include landscape where appropriate for its purposes? While based on the work that Landscape Urbanists do in cities, which isn't much different in real-world cases from what any traditional city designer might do, this distinction may not have practical implications in terms of design, it does speak a lot to the philosophical differences that have impact on both urbanist ideologies and the politics of urban development. As discussed by Michael Dennis and Alastair McIntosh in their essay, "Landscape and the City," in 500 years we have gone from the sacred medieval city walled off from the profane countryside, to the opposite, where the city and the landscape mingle at their edges, and where nature is celebrated as pure and sacred and the city denounced as polluted and profane. Much of this switch in attitudes occurred when the ills of the crowded industrial city inspired various alternatives, from "the low-density Garden (non) City and its cousin, the (non) City of Modern Architecture."Landscape Urbanism is to a significant degree a successor to these nature-is-sacred attitudes, even though, in defense of the Landscape Urbanists, they believe they are responding to reality when they say we need to design cities to take into account, for instance, what they call "automobility." There is, however, a basic misunderstanding at the heart of the anti-urban construct, namely that the human impact on the natural landscape has been much more brutal outside the city than in it. Agriculture and now sprawl have changed the landscape much more than cities have. (Ironically enough, while New Urbanists in the book criticize Landscape Urbanists for cooperating with sprawl, the same criticism has often been leveled against New Urbanists for enabling greenfield development.)Having begun this review by dismissing the backbiting between New Urbanists and Landscape Urbanists, it's fair that I mention that many contributors to this book understand the uselessness of this approach and take pains to analyze what the two urbanisms have in common (positively and negatively), or even how they complement each other, before identifying the differences. Included in this group are Douglas Kelbaugh, Neal Payton, Daniel Solomon, Kristina Hill and Larissa Larson, and Nan Ellin. Others, including Duany himself, are free with criticisms of their movement. (To Duany, New Urbanism is precluded "from becoming the paradigm for a sustainable urbanism" because it needs, politically, to justify the persistence of the single-family house to implement its otherwise sustainable ideals.)Much of the dispute over which is primary, the built or the unbuilt, is theoretical, as most of the real work of Landscape Urbanists has focused on the redevelopment and reintegration into the city of abandoned industrial sites left to decay in post-industrial cities. It's not for nothing that the best-known project from a designer identified as a Landscape Urbanist is the High Line in New York, designed (to a great extent) by James Corner (who does not now identify himself as a Landscape Urbanist but who was instrumental in the movement's theoretical development). While these sites are well-suited for interventions by the landscape-minded, because they typically exist separated from a city's network of streets, it's important to acknowledge that these sites do not exist as unbuilt nature, but as a product or residue of urban development, and their re-use is part of a city's evolution, not a landscape's renewal. It so happens that the city I live in -- Santa Monica, California -- is undergoing change in its former industrial lands, and in Part 2 of this review I will attempt to apply some of what this book tells us to a real situation of urban complexity. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-gruber/the-standard-model-of-urb_b_4331005.html - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-gruber/the-standard-model-of-urb_b_4331005.html

Landscape urbanism appears, at heart, to have a fondness for infrastructure and a desire to incorporate this infrastructure into design without resorting to superficially “shrub it up”
