Ares I-X rocket completes successful flight test

NASA's Ares I-X test rocket lifted off at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a 2-minute powered flight.

NASA's Ares I-X test rocket lifted off at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a 2-minute powered flight. The test flight lasted about 6 minutes from its launch from the newly-modified Launch Complex 39B until splash down of the rocket's booster stage nearly 150 miles down range.

"This is a huge step forward for NASA's exploration goals," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Ares I-X provides NASA with an enormous amount of data that will be used to improve the design and safety of the next generation of American spaceflight vehicles — vehicles that could again take humans beyond low Earth orbit."

The 327-foot tall Ares I-X test vehicle produced 2.6 million pounds of thrust to accelerate the rocket to nearly 3 g's and Mach 4.76, just shy of hypersonic speed. It capped its easterly flight at a sub-orbital altitude of 150,000 feet after the separation of its first stage, a four-segment solid rocket booster.

Parachutes deployed for recovery of the booster and the solid rocket motor will be recovered at sea for later inspection. The simulated upper stage, Orion crew module, and launch abort system will not be recovered.

Russia is planning to build a nuclear-powered spacecraft for a manned mission to Mars.

According to news agency  http://en.rian.ru/science/20091028/156623290.html%20 - RiaNovosti , Anatoly Perminov, head of the Russian Federal Space Agency. told a government commission that the plan was crucial if was crucial if Russia wanted to maintain a competitive edge in the space race.

The basic design could be ready by 2012. A final version would take another nine years, and would cost around $580 million to build, said Perminov. It would be based around a megawatt-class nuclear reactor - far more powerful than the small nuclear reactors that power some Russian military satellites.

"The project is aimed at implementing large-scale space exploration programs, including a manned mission to Mars, interplanetary travel, the creation and operation of planetary outposts," Perminov said. But he stopped short of proposing a permanent base on Mars.

President Dmitry Medvedev backed the project, and urged the government to find the funds.

If the project goes ahead, it would be a huge boost for the Russian space program. Russia is currently using 40 year old Soyuz booster rockets, and plans for a replacement are well behind schedule.

vestiimages/64117/20081216_space_elevator.jpg -

http://www.netpress.com.mk/vestiimages/64117/Space_elevator.jpg

Water has long been suspected to exist in the permanently shadowed polar craters on the http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/the-moon/ - Moon , and now the LCROSS impact has allowed scientists to make a direct and definitive finding of this precious resource in a place NASA and other http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/space/ - space agencies are considering exploring with human expeditions. Many say this could be a game-changing discovery for the future of http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/the-moon/ - lunar science and exploration. Unlike the previous http://www.universetoday.com/2009/09/23/yes-theres-water-on-the-moon/ - announcement in September of water on the Moon, where water exists diffusely across the moon as hydroxyl or water molecules adhering to the surface in low concentrations, this new discovery could mean underground reservoirs of water ice. "There is too much water to be just absorbed in the soil," said Anthony Colaprete of the LCROSS mission at Friday's press conference. "There has to be real solid ice there. You could melt it and drink it."

But could you really drink it? "Well, not if it has methanol in it. We need to sort out the flavor of the water," said Colaprete, "meaning we need to find out if it is water, ice, or vapor. We still need to do that math."

Colaprete said from the amount of water the spectrometers on the LCROSS spacecraft detected, initial indications are it is ice. However, Colaprete added that the impacting Centaur upper stage didn't hit appear to hit something hard and frozen, from the images of the http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/earth/volcano-crater/ - crater .

If someone was walking on the Moon and was able to walk in Cabeus crater where the impact took place, would the http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/the-moon/lunar-regolith/ - regolith there look different compared to other places on the Moon? "That's a good question – and we've been talking about that," Colaprete said. "It would be an interesting place to walk around. With our near http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/physics/infrared-light/ - infrared camera we can relate the the data to what the human eye can see, and try to understand what the terrain looks like. We never saw http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/earth/volcano-crater/ - the crater floor before impact, but now we can see what the floor looks like."

Did they find anything else in the plume created by the impact? "We're seeing a lot of stuff," Colaprete said. "I think there's a little bit of everything. We’re seeing other emission lines in the spectroscopic data we haven't completely identified. We're still working on those — I don't know what all else is in there just yet. We've been focusing on the water quest so far."

As to whether they're seeing any organics, the team couldn't yet say definitively. Colaprete said they are seeing compounds similar to those seen previously in http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/asteroids/ - asteroids and http://www.universetoday.com/guide-to-space/comets/ - comets .

"This is only another snapshot in time of our understanding of the moon," said Mike Wargo, NASA's chief lunar scientist, " and we'll be continuing to work to get more details on the water and everything else. We're not done yet."

 kina_vselenska_stanica.jpg

Bone loss and kidney stones are well known as essential problems for astronauts to overcome during extended stays in space. Crew members engage in physical exercise for two and a half hours a day, six times a week (fifteen hours a week) while in orbit to avoid these issues.
Nevertheless, the risks of these problems occurring cannot be completely eliminated through physical exercise alone...

high salt intake increases acidity in the body, which can accelerate bone loss...

The three key elements for promoting the health of elderly people to prevent fractures are nutrition, exercise and medicine. Meals should be nutritionally balanced with calcium-rich foods (milk, small fish, etc.) and vitamin D (fish, mushrooms, etc.). Limited sunbathing is also important for activation of vitamin D. Physical exercise to increase bone load and muscle training should alsobe integrated into each person’s daily life. Those at high risk for fractures should take effective medicines to reduce the risk of fractures.
Accordingly, the secrets of the promotion of astronauts’ health obtained from space medicine are expected to be utilized to promote the health of elderly people and the education of children.

June 2009 - Could China Get Human to Mars First?

Last september, the People’s Republic of China conducted its first three-person space mission--Shenzhou-7--featuring the country’s inaugural space walk, taken by a taikonaut wearing a made-in-China space suit. Concurrently, its orbital mission to the moon, Chang’e-1, was sending back to Earth superb images of the lunar surface. Both were startling achievements by a relative newcomer to space.
Indeed, in the last decade, the Chinese have burst into manned and unmanned spaceflight. Michael Griffin, the former NASA administrator who drove the U.S. moon-then-Mars strategy, has opined that China could beat the United States back to the moon’s surface--or at least be the first to put people back in lunar orbit--and do so within 10 years. Boris Chertok, the 97-year-old patriarch of Russia’s space program, seems even more impressed with China’s accomplishments, predicting last February that it will be the Chinese who first ”people Mars.”
Could that happen? Maybe. If China were to accelerate its rate of progress, it might succeed in sending teams of astronauts to Mars and other enticing destinations within two decades. But to do so it would have to depart from the top-down, by-the-book, party-line decision...

Space Farming - Plants Check Out Microgravity

The preliminary results are in: plants in space appear to grow and develop normally! Wisconsin Center for Space Automation and Robotics (WCSAR) Plant-Space Biologist Dr. Bratislav Stankovic finds this extremely exciting and thinks the rest of us should as well.

Dr. Stankovic and one of WCSAR’s growth chambers.

WCSAR is a research center affiliated with the UW-Madison College of Engineering and funded primarily by NASA. At WCSAR, the study of plants in space has two objectives: first, to determine how to grow plants in microgravity and second, to determine how those plants grow and develop. Stankovic and others at WCSAR recently completed preliminary analysis of the first complete life-cycle plant growth experiment onboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The experiment consisted of growing the Arabidopsis thaliana from seed to seed over a period of two months. Arabidopsis thaliana is a relatively simple plant used as model system for plant molecular biology studies. What makes this experiment so exciting, according to Stankovic, is the healthy, normal growth observed and the intriguing implications of these results. "We are right now scratching the surface of understanding how to grow plants in microgravity and what, if anything, is different in microgravity."

Unfortunately, environmental control problems have rendered much of the previous research regarding plant growth and development useless to science. The main source of contamination in past experiments was the presence of ethylene, a plant hormone capable of causing sterilization when present in excess. The Arabidopsis experiment used the innovative environmental control systems of the %20http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=8178.0;attach=21446 - Advanced Astroculture growth chamber, developed by WCSAR engineers, to remove these contaminations.

Advanced Astroculture, about the size of a shoebox, contains an ethylene scrubbing device designed to maintain low ethylene levels, much like a carbon dioxide scrubber does for a spaceship. The scrubber works by oxidizing the ethylene hydrocarbons to CO2 and H2O. Advanced Astroculture also incorporates a seed tray which uses a unique grid-like restraining system to hold seeds, nutrients and soil firmly in place.

Without the complicating presence of ethylene, Stankovic had the unprecedented opportunity to examine Arabidopsis plants against those grown in an identical chamber on Earth. Upon analysis, researchers noted almost no differences between those plants grown in space and those in the control environment on Earth. This preliminary analysis only considered physically observable characteristics, from seed production and viability to plant mass.

Presently Stankovic and his associates are working on the secondary analysis. He explains, "We are trying to understand what happens to plants on a molecular level in microgravity, how similar or dissimilar they are to plants we grew on the ground in the identical growth chamber." A process called gene expression profiling was used to allow researchers to see exactly what happens on a molecular level. Genetic messenger molecules are tagged with a fluorescent substance that glows only when these messenger molecules are released, signaling an active gene. In this way it is possible to see exactly which genes in each cell are active.

Stankovic hopes to complete the analysis and publish this unprecedented and highly anticipated research towards the end of 2003. Once published, it will represent the first comprehensive report of plant gene expression profiling under the influence of microgravity.

"In the year 2003 we are still in the heroic age of understanding how plants and other organisms grow and develop in microgravity." Stankovic sees the Arabidopsis experiment as the beginning of many sustained plant growth experiments onboard the ISS. The Arabidopsis experiment suggests that plants can and do grow and develop normally under tightly controlled conditions. This has enormous implications for the future of space travel as well as possible commercial applications. "No matter what result we get from this gene expression data, it will be interesting. If they are similar we don't need to worry about growing plants on Mars. If they are different we had better find out how different they are, and use genetic engineering to mitigate any undesirable effects of microgravity," Stankovic notes.

If shown empirically to be unaffected by microgravity, presumably plants will be unaffected by any amount gravity in the range of 0 to 1g. This opens the possibility of plants growing elsewhere, from the Moon to Mars and beyond. According to Stankovic, NASA is currently looking at Mars-deployable greenhouses for future missions to Mars. Such greenhouses will only be possible if research at WCSAR and other research centers like it shows plants to have normal life cycles even at a molecular level in microgravity environments.

Extended space travel requires some sort of renewable food source, which plants can provide if they can be grown successfully in microgravity. To be renewable, plants also must be able to reproduce viably. If this can be done, a major obstacle to space travel will have been eliminated. Plant-space biologists like Stankovic have determined 12 plant species useful for life support applications in space. These species include lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, peppers, strawberries and fresh herbs such as chives, basil, mint and dill. Stankovic hopes to begin research with some of these species once the simpler Arabidopsis plants have been fully studied. With successful completion of this research, astronauts will be able to enjoy vegetables grown in future versions of WCSAR's Advanced Astroculture growth chambers.

The psychological benefit of such research cannot be neglected, especially in the wake of the Columbia tragedy. The Columbia was carrying two WCSAR experiments back to Earth. Stankovic considers the opportunity to work with the astronauts who conduct his experiments to be one of the perks of his job.

Research continues despite the tragedy, though it will be a while before the next WCSAR experiment will head for the stars. According to Dr. Stankovic, research must continue, because "only now are we in a position to address fundamental environmental and biological questions."

"Yutu" rover explores moon with state-of-the-art equipment

The Chang’e 3 lander has so far been responsible for many of the lunar mission’s highlights, including conducting the soft-landing on the moon and snapping photos of the Earth and other celestial bodies.

But the lunar rover, the Yutu, or "the Jade Rabbit", is now set to begin greater exploration of the moon’s surface. And it’s been equipped with state-of-the-art technology to transmit all its findings back to Earth.

The rover has two panoramic cameras as well as four others that can capture stereoscopic 3-D images. To analyze the structure and composition of the moon’s soil and rocks, the Yutu also has an infra-red spectrometer.

Its robotic arms have also been outfitted with a small and light alpha particle X-ray spectrometer to examine the composition of various chemical elements. A radar has also been installed on the rover’s underside. It’s capable of penetrating up to 30 meters below the moon’s soil and several hundred meters into the moon’s crust.

China's moon rover "sleeps" through lunar night
12-24-2013 20:50 BJT
Special Report:Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The moon rover and lander of China's Chang'e 3 lunar probe mission will "sleep" during the lunar night, enduring extreme low temperatures on the lunar surface.

According to Wu Fenglei of the Beijing Aerospace Control Center, the lander will "go to sleep" at about 7 a.m. on Christmas Day and the moon rover, Jade Rabbit, will fall asleep at about 1 a.m. on Boxing Day.

The forthcoming lunar night, expected to begin on Dec. 26, will last for about two weeks, experts with the center estimated. During their "sleep", both lander and rover will have to tolerate minus 180 degrees Celsius. Scientists tested the lander early Tuesday to ensure it can stand the temperature drop.

Both lander and rover are stable, said Wu, adding they have completed a series of scientific tasks in the past two days.

Chang'e-3 soft-landed on the moon's Sinus Iridum, or the Bay of Rainbows, on Dec. 14, establishing China as the third country to carry out such a mission after the United States and Soviet Union.

Yutu, the rover, will survey the moon's geological structure and surface substances and look for natural resources for three months, while the lander will conduct in-situ exploration at the landing site for one year.

Russian cosmonauts take record-breaking spacewalk

Two Russian spacemen, Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazansky, have taken an 8 hours 7 minutes spacewalk, reported mission control from Houston on NASA TV. The spacewalkers wearing Russian Orlan-MK space suits set a record for the longest Russian spacewalk ever. Cosmonauts were installing two high-resolution cameras and attending to experiment equipment on the space station's exterior.

The spacewalk has also become the longest at the ISS in 2013. The mission of commander Oleg Kotov and flight engineer Sergey Ryazansky was to install two cameras on the outside of the International Space Station. The high and medium resolution cameras will facilitate taking pictures of the Earth from outside the ISS, and stream the images of our planet back home in near real time. Kotov and Ryazansky placed the cameras but 'couldn't manage to switch them on,' according to the flight control team at the Russian Mission Control Center, who were unable to receive telemetry data from the equipment. So the task was aborted. Kotov and Ryazanskiy were told to remove the cameras and bring them inside the orbiting laboratory for further inspection. In addition to their work with the cameras, the spacewalkers successfully replaced seismic scientific equipment with new and sophisticated earthquake-monitoring hardware. Initially, the spacewalk was planned to last about 7 hours, but as the cosmonauts had to remove the cameras and return them to the station, they worked an hour longer. The delay turned out to be record-breaking. China's Jade Rabbit moon rover showing signs of life - 19 February 2014

THE moon robot has come back to life – kind of. China's first lunar rover, Yutu, also known as Jade Rabbit, phoned home last week, shortly after some had given it up for dead. It's unclear how the rest of the mission will fare.

Yutu's parent craft – the Chang'e-3 lander –touched down on the moon on 14 December and released the rover. Trouble came six weeks later, at the start of its second lunar night. On the moon, night lasts for half of each Earthly month and surface temperatures plunge to below -180 °C, during which time the rover and lander hibernate. As night rolled in on 25 January, Yutu seemed to have failed, but mission operators had to wait until lunar dawn to check.

On 12 February, the Chinese ECNS news agency reported that efforts to reactivate the rover were unsuccessful, and many assumed it was dead. The same day, another news agency, Xinhua, reported that the Chinese space agency had received a signal, as did a website that tracks amateurs monitoring for radio signals from space.

It is still not clear whether Yutu is able to carry out orders from mission control. Even if it is the end of the road for Yutu, China's space adventure is just starting – the country wants a crewed lunar base. And the rover leads a new wave of moon exploration. Private firms (see "Sports drink could be first commercial moon delivery") have moon plans, as do the US, Russia, India and South Korea.

[tube]pv47n9xcHPQ[/tube]

Reports of the moon bunny's death may be somewhat exaggerated. Despite earlier suggestions that China's lunar rover, Yutu – or Jade Rabbit – had been officially declared dead, Chinese state media now say that the rabbit has phoned home. It remains unclear, though, whether the rover is healthy enough to continue its mission.

A news statement from state media agency Xinhua reports that the Chinese space agency is seeing signs of life from Yutu. And a website that records amateur monitoring of radio signals from space has received a downlink signal from Yutu, according to the Planetary Society.

Getting a signal from the rover raises hopes that all is not lost. According to Xinhua, a mission member has said: "The situation of the little rabbit is improving, with a little indication of awakening. Wait a while more."

Early mourning

Yutu's troubles began last month, just six weeks into its three-month mission. China's Chang'e-3 lander touched down on the moon on 14 December and released the Yutu rover about 7 hours later. Both machines successfully entered hibernation mode during their first lunar night. On the moon, night lasts for half of each Earthly month and plunges surface temperatures from daytime highs of about 90 °C to below -180 °C.

When the second lunar night rolled around on 25 January the lander went in to hibernation but Yutu appeared to have failed. It is impossible to communicate with the vehicles during lunar night, so mission operators had to wait until the new lunar day on Monday this week to confirm whether Yutu would respond.

Communication was established with Chang'e-3 but today, the ECNS news agency reported efforts to reactive the rover were unsuccessful: "China's first lunar rover, Yutu, could not be restored to full function on Monday as expected, and netizens mourned it on Weibo, China's Twitter-like service."" No other details were given at the time, leading many observers to think the rover was a goner. News of a wake-up signal is hopeful, but there are no verified reports yet on whether the rover is able to receive and carry out orders from mission controllers.

Cold, cold night

The rover's mechanical problems are likely related to critical components that must be protected during the cold lunar night. When temperatures plunge, the rover's mast is designed to fold down to protect delicate instruments, which can then be kept warm by a radioactive heat source. Yutu also needs to angle a solar panel towards the point where the sun will rise to maintain power levels. A mechanical fault in these systems could leave the rover fatally exposed to the dark and bitter cold.

China's space agency has not released any more details, but abrasive lunar dust is a top suspect. Moon soil gets ground up by micrometeoroid impacts into a glassy dust that can then become charged as it is bombarded by solar particles. During the Apollo programme the sharp-edged dust grains wore through astronaut space suits, scratched up mirrors used for laser ranging experiments and caused moon buggies to overheat.

Even if it is the end of the road for Yutu, China's race into space is just getting started. The nation has bold plans for a crewed lunar base. The rover has also helped put the moon back on the map –NASA has recently began a programme working with private companies to build robots for lunar mining.

The Devil Worm

Can survive: Crippling pressure, lack of oxygen, high temperature.

This species of nematode, only recently discovered in 2011, has been found living up to 2.2 miles below the surface of the Earth. It blew away the previous record for multicellular organisms by a full mile. These worms spend their lives in total darkness, drinking 12,000 year old water and eating simple bacteria.

Rosetta comet mission falls into trouble
...
Ecstasy turned into worry when it emerged that the lander, which was supposed to use harpoons to tether itself to the comet's surface, was unable to fire them and appeared to be moving around, a Daily Mail report said.

Stephan Ulamec, who ran the landing programme, said early tests suggested that the craft had bounced before turning and settling again.

“It touched down and was re-bouncing. So maybe today, we didn't just land, we landed twice,” he was quoted as saying.

Ulamec added that scientists were still not sure about the status of the project.

14.11.2014 - European probe plants thermometer on comet

The European Space Agency says its Philae lander is doing well and has succeeded in planting a thermometer in the comet where it touched down this week.
The agency said Friday that scientists have received a steady stream of data from the lander, which on Wednesday became the first spacecraft to touch down on a comet. However, their job is complicated by the fact that Philae landed next to a cliff that is blocking sunlight from its solar panels.
Planting a thermometer in the surface was Philae's first so-called "mechanical operation" but ESA says it will hold off on any more for now. The lander's primary battery only has power for another day or so and scientists are contemplating realigning it so that the solar panels can charge the craft [ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-2834330/European-probe-plants-thermometer-comet.html - 1 ]

Danger: What should astronauts avoid doing?

Do you want the funny answer or the serious answer? Not sure...? Well let me give you a little of both!

There are obvious things an astronaut shouldn't do. For example, you shouldn't put your spacewalking boots on the wrong feet. Also, you should not forget to attach your safety tether to the tether point immediately outside the hatch before exiting said hatch on your spacewalk. You should not --upon receiving coupons for a lifetime's worth of free pizza at a speaking appearance-- toss the coupons out into your audience, creating a mass "feeding frenzy" that may ultimately put the owner of the pizzeria out of business when numerous patrons show up at the same time for free pies.

    ~

Many of you may now be thinking... okay, enough with the jokes, tell us some real stuff. Well, according to my "sources" (and they are pretty darned reliable), everything I listed above is TRUE...

    ~

In short, as an astronaut you must realize that everyone is watching you; all the time. Always follow the mantra of "... keep your head down and keep coloring." Yet eventually, we're all going to gooch up something and as an astronaut it's hard to know when and if your actions will carry severe --or no-- consequences. The so-called "bar" is a variable; set high for some, and quite low for others. In reading Canadian Astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield's Book, "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth," he related ways he thought being an astronaut provided life lessons for those not in the profession. He didn't tell you about this one. It exists in every walk of life.

Still, being an astronaut... I wouldn't trade a second. It's the greatest job in the universe!

Gross Mismanagement of American Rocket Science Beginning to Show?

The fact that so many U.S. launch programs have resorted to Russian engine technology is a giant red flag in an aerospace industry struggling to shrug off recent failures, political setbacks and accusations about the premature retirement of the Space Shuttle Program. The loss of the Shuttle, in particular, has forced the U.S. to bear the humiliation of being dependent on Russian launch vehicles for rides to the Space Station at a geopolitically hostile time.

The headline’s suggestion that Russian sales girls are responsible for these problems is tongue-in-cheek, of course, though vodka might have been a factor. I (the author) have worked on the Atlas V program alongside Russian rocket engineers, and I greatly admired their professionalism and skill. They are geniuses, every one. But aside from that, I don’t know how to explain the strategically inexcusable decisions that have made U.S. access to space totally dependent on Russian cooperation. This seemed a mistake when the first moves were being made in the 1990s, and it seems the full weight of those mistakes are becoming clear now. The U.S. is simply unprepared to supply all the affordable, dependable rocket engines it now needs, and that is due to catastrophic mismanagement and a drought of foresight. Fixing that will take some time. Maybe it’s not surprising that in those early days, Nike crossed paths with NASA; at that time, just about every new invention seemed to trace itself back to the Apollo missions somehow. Nike Air was no exception.

    ...

in 1978, Nike revealed the next big thing:

First produced for the Honolulu Marathon, the Nike Air Tailwind included new technology developed by former NASA engineer M. Frank Rudy. Rudy’s innovation repurposed an aeronautics technique called blow rubber molding. It was once used to create astronaut helmets for the Apollo missions and later enabled Rudy to design a hollowed-out midsole in which he embedded polyurethane pouches filled with dense gases.

The idea—as well as the branding strategy—hinged upon the assumption that running on air would provide superior cushioning, since the sacks of gas wouldn’t wear out after repeated use. Nike Air was initially marketed to elite runners, though that strategy shifted over time to include anyone with $100 or more to spend on sneakers.

Move over Nasa: Russia reveals plans for 2018 test of nuclear engine that could get cosmonauts to Mars in SIX WEEKS
  • This compares to 18 months spacecraft currently need to get to Mars

  • Nuclear propulsion weighs almost half as much as a chemical rocket

  • Nasa is also are planning to build rockets powered by nuclear fission

  • They hope it could be used to carry astronauts to the red planet in 2033

  • Russia has announced that it will test a nuclear engine in 2018 that could help cosmonauts reach Mars in just six weeks.
This compares to the 18 months spacecraft currently need to get to Mars, and could make Russia the first nation to land humans on the red planet.
The country is betting on nuclear propulsion because it weighs almost half as much as a chemical rocket without reducing thrust.

This means larger payloads of cargo can be carried on the spacecraft and they can also be made to travel far faster.
And unlike existing technology which uses defined trajectories, a nuclear engine also allows a spacecraft to manoeuvre throughout the flight.
The $274 million project, which was originally overseen by the space agency RosCosmos in 2010, has now become the responsibility of nuclear group, Rosatom.
'A nuclear power unit makes it possible to reach Mars in a matter of one to one and a half months, providing capability for manoeuvring and acceleration,' Sergey Kirienko, head of Rosatom told RT .
'Today's engines can only reach Mars in a year and a half, without the possibility of return.'
Russia currently has used over 30 fission reactors in space, the US has flown only one - the SNAP-10A (System for Nuclear Auxiliary Power) in 1965.
    HOW NUCLEAR PROPULSION WORKS
Nuclear rockets are rocket engines that use a nuclear fission reactor to heat propellant.

Fission entails the splitting of atoms of uranium in a nuclear reactor

The idea is relatively simple; a nuclear reactor will be used, similar to the ones used for power generation today.

However, rather than using the reactor to heat water into steam, it will heat propellant instead and run it out of a rocket nozzle for thrust.

Engineers at Nasa have also been drawing up plans to use nuclear thermal propulsion in a mission to Mars in 2033.
According to the space agency's design, uranium-235 nuclear reactions are used to heat liquid hydrogen inside a reactor, turning it into ionized hydrogen gas, or plasma.
This plasma is then channeled through a rocket nozzle to generate thrust.

Dr Stanely Borowski, an engineer at Nasa's John Glenn Research Centre, last year outlined how this could then be used to propel a space with its crew through space in a official Nasa paper.
He said the spacecraft, called Copernicus, would consist of separate cargo and crewed transfer vehicles, each powered by a nuclear thermal propuslion stage.
These would be constructed from a 'core' that use three engines each capable of producing thrust of around 25,000 lbs of force.
He estimates that these vehicles could make the 40 million mile trip to Mars within 100 days.
It took the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft carrying Nasa's Curiosity Rover to Mars 253 days to reach the red planet.
Writing in his paper, Dr Borowski said: 'The analysis presented here indicates transit time reductions as much as 50 per cent are possible.'
Nasa first began researching nuclear thermal rockets as part of its Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA) programme in 1959.

However, the project, which was a collaboration between Nasa and the US Atomic Energy Comission, was officially ended in 1973.
During that time, engineers produced several prototypes, the most advanced of which was known as a Pewee engine. None of the engines were ever used for flight.
Proposals to use nuclear powered rockets were also discussed in a presentation last year by Dr Michael Houts, nuclear research manager at Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Centre.
He described the nuclear propulsion was a 'game changing technology for space exploration'.
He said they hoped to prove the viability and affordability of the technology within the next three years.
Dr Houts said: 'Nuclear thermal propulsion is a fundamentally new capability - the energy comes from fission not chemical reactions.
'Advanced nuclear propulsion systems could have extremely high performance and unique capabilities.'
    ASA'S NUCLEAR HISTORY

Nasa has been using nuclear material to power spacecraft for decades.

In 1960 a satellite programme called TRANSIT, used to guide missiles from space, was the first to use plutonium isotopes to create batteries.

These work by wrapping the plutonium with thermoelectrics, that turn the heat given off by the decaying isotope into electricity.
Nasa also used plutonium batteries on its failed Nimbus B1 satellite, which blew up on launch.

In 1972 and 1973 Nasa then launched its Pioneer space probes, which used 155-watt nuclear batteries to keep them powered as they travelled to the very edge of the solar system.

The Viking landers, which touched down on Mars for the first time in 1976, also used plutonium batteries to power their experiments.

The Voyager probes, which have become the first manmade objects to leave the solar system, also relied upon three plutonium-238 batteries that have allowed them to communicate with Earth for 36 years.

The Ulysses sun probe also used a nuclear battery to keep the spacecraft operating while it performed a slingshot around Jupiter.

The Galileo spaceprobe to Jupiter's moons also used two nuclear batteries to give it 570 watts of power.

The Cassini space probe to Saturn carried the largest nuclear battery every launched, weighing 72lbs.

In 1959, Nasa began work with the US Atomic Energy Commission to develop a nuclear powered rocket to carry astronauts into space, but the project was ended in 1973 at the same time as the Apollo space missions.

SpaceX has successfully launched and landed a recycled Falcon 9 rocket for the second time. The rocket’s first stage — the 14-story-tall core that houses the fuel and the rocket’s main engines — touched down on one of the company’s autonomous drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from a launchpad at nearby Cape Canaveral, Florida. It’s the 12th time SpaceX has successfully landed one of these rocket stages out of 17 attempts, and the seventh time it’s performed the feat at sea.

This particular rocket previously flew in January, when it was used to  https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/14/14273074/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-landing-success-drone-ship - put 10 satellites into orbit  for communications company Iridium. The rocket then landed on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean. SpaceX retrieved the rocket and spent the next few months refurbishing it in preparation for today’s launch. This afternoon, it was used to launch Bulgaria’s first communications satellite for TV service provider Bulsatcom.

The landing wasn’t easy, though. Because the rocket had to push BulgariaSat-1 to such a high orbit, the first stage experienced more force and heat during reentry than any other Falcon 9, according to  https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/878313692986621953 - a tweet from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . Musk even warned that there was a “good chance [the] rocket booster doesn't make it back.”

Shortly after the landing, though, Musk  https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/878334920141135872 - returned to Twitter  to add that the rocket booster used “almost all of the emergency crush core,” which helps soften the landing. It was the first time SpaceX has landed one rocket on both of its drone ships. (SpaceX keeps one in California for launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base.)

    http://www.build.mk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1719&PID=214313#214313 - http://www.build.mk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1719&PID=214313#214313

The International Latex Corporation made the boots which were part of Cernan's extra-vehicular (EV) equipment. The EV boots were worn over the boots that were integrated into the spacesuit and which included the pressure bladder and thermal coverings. The boots were made with a silicone sole, woven stainless steel uppers (Chromel-R), and included additional layers of thermal protection and beta felt in the soles as protection against extreme temperatures and sharp rocks on the lunar surface.

    [tube]Agsl7x8K5hk[/tube]

Boeing officially turned over the U.S. on-orbit segment of the ISS to NASA with the signing ofgovernment form DD-250 at the conclusion of an Acceptance Review Board meeting.
NASA has announced it is working with the European Space Agency towards merging their respective Mars exploration programs for missions beginning in 2016. NASA is currently preparing for the launch of the Mars Science Laboratory by late next year

The GAO released a report (GAO 10-9) in November stating that high transportation costs andinadequate funding may prevent NASA from ever fully utilizing the ISS for science research purposes. Other findings:
       – Uncertainty over the long-term future of the station (beyond the current 2015 U.S. shutoffdate) has made it difficult to support scientific users, who need time to replicate theirresearch before it can be published.
       – Under current plans, only 79 percent of the internal payload sites on the station ultimatelywill be used, and of those only 50 percent are currently required for NASA programs.

The Lunex Project was a US Air Force 1958 plan for a crewed lunar landing prior to the Apollo Program. The final lunar expedition plan in 1961 was for a 21-person underground Air Force base on the Moon by 1968 at a total cost of $7.5 billion

CSIS Space Initiatives has made an estimate, based on available literature, that the likely costs of developing Moon Base would be about $35 billion, and operating the base would run about $7.35 billion per year. By comparison, the development cost for all but the Russian section of the International Space Station (ISS) is estimated at around $85 billion, including $35 billion for Space Shuttle missions. In the years after the Shuttle retires, the annual operation costs of the ISS will be $4.5 billion per year [ https://www.csis.org/analysis/costs-international-lunar-base#:~:text=Development%20of%20the%20lunar%20base,located%20at%20the%20south%20pole. - 1 ]
