One of the advantages offered by Novec 1230 fluid’s high boiling point is that it presents very low vapour pressures, enabling it to be transported in lightweight totes or drums as opposed to steel pressurised containers. This allows Novec 1230 fluid to be readily air freighted and as both initial filling and recharging operations are possible by simply pouring the fluid into containers, prior to super-pressurising, the filling operation is far simpler than with traditional high pressure gases.

Many people ask if there are any hazards associated with handling silica aerogel. Working with aerogel with your bare hands can have a slight desiccating effect on the skin. This is due to the absorbance of moisture and oils from the skin into the pores of the aerogel. This is more of a nuisance than a hazard and can be avoided by wearing gloves. Cutting and shaping aerogels usually produces a cloud of fine dust. The particles of aerogel in the dust are smooth and round and, therefore, are not considered to be a laceration hazard (as asbestos is). Sometimes called “frozen smoke”, aerogel is made by the supercritical drying of liquid gels of alumina, chromia, tin oxide, or carbon. It’s 99.8% empty space, which makes it look semi-transparent. Aerogel is a fantastic insulator — if you had a shield of aerogel, you could easily defend yourself from a flamethrower. It stops cold, it stops heat. You could build a warm dome on the Moon. Aerogels have unbelievable surface area in their internal fractal structures — cubes of aerogel just an inch on a side may have an internal surface area equivalent to a football field. Despite its low density, aerogel has been looked into as a component of military armor because of its insulating properties.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle in the UK have created a new kind of concrete glue that can patch up the cracks in concrete structures, restoring buildings that have been damaged by seismic events or deteriorated over time. But the glue isn’t an adhesive or some kind of synthetic material; the researchers have custom-designed a bacteria to burrow deep into the cracks in concrete where they produce a mix of calcium carbonate and a special bacteria glue that hardens to the same strength of the surrounding concreate.

Digital Dawn is their reactive window blind with a surface that is in constant flux, growing in luminosity in response to its surroundings. It digitally emulates the process of photosynthesis using printed electroluminescent technology. the darker a space becomes the brighter the blind will glow maintaining a balance in luminosity. A natural, botanical environment appears to grow and evolve on the window lamp.

of concrete that transmits light. A wall made of “LitraCon” allegedly has the

Activ selfcleaning glass

Pilkington Activ™ Self-Cleaning Glass uses the forces of nature to maintain its clear appearance without leaving unsightly streaks. Dirt is broken down by daylight and is then washed away by rain, thus making it environmentally friendly and very easy to maintain.
The glass uses a microscopic coating with a unique dual-action. The first stage is "photocatalytic" - the coating reacts with daylight to break down organic dirt. The second stage is "hydrophilic" - instead of forming droplets, rainwater hits the glass and spreads evenly, running off in a "sheet" and taking the loosened dirt with it, also drying quickly without leaving streaks. The self-cleaning glass can also be combined with a range of different products to offer many additional benefits (such as thermal, solar and noise control).
