"A lot of things I used to love about cycling, such as fresh air and safe, fun places to ride, have disappeared. With the WaveWalker, I have re-discovered the real pleasures of biking."

A bicycle built for … you!

A prototype bicycle dubbed “Airbike” was created using additive layer manufacturing, a 3-D printing process that begins with a design on a computer. A press of the button transforms the design into a physical object through laser sintering, or melting, of the selected structural material into successive 2-D layers. Images courtesy of EADS.

In Bristol, UK, the European aerospace and defense group EADS has unveiled a demonstrator model that was “grown” from nylon powder in a process that allows complete sections of the bicycle – such as the wheels, bearings and axle – to be built in one piece and to precise user specifications.

The additive layer manufacturing (ALM) process, similar in concept to 3-D printing, enables a computer design to be transformed into a physical object at the press of a button. A laser melts successive thin layers of nylon until a solid, fully formed bicycle emerges. The computer, connected to a machine containing the powdered structural material, splits the 3-D design of a component into many 2-D layers, and the laser melts the powder into the layers to form the object.

An engineer prepares the control system for laser sintering nylon powder material, part of a process that can “grow” a physical object from a computer design.

“The beauty is that complex designs do not cost any extra to produce,” said Andy Hawkins, the lead engineer. “The laser can draw any shape you like, and many unique design features have been incorporated into the Airbike, such as the auxetic structure to provide saddle cushioning or the integrated bearings encased within the hubs.” Auxetic structures, which when stretched become thicker perpendicular to the applied force, offer high energy absorption and fracture resistance.

The ALM technology can manipulate metals, nylon and carbon-reinforced plastics at the molecular level, which means it can be used in high-stress, safety-critical aviation applications. Compared with traditional machined parts, those produced by ALM are up to 65 percent lighter but just as strong, according to EADS.

Manufactured using a laser-based process, this bicycle is constructed entirely of nylon, except for the tires and drive train.

The demonstrator model features a strong, lightweight integrated truss structure, a spoke design that mimics the A400M eight-bladed scimitar propeller, a Kevlar belt for a clean drive system, and embossed text for personalization.

But your own Airbike could be made to your specs – so as you plan your dream wedding, how would you like your bike?

Bike made of 9$ cardboard boxes
The bike may not be able to haul you up a mountain anytime soon, but it’s got spinning wheels and will get you through your morning commute. It’s even water resistant so it won’t melt before your eyes. http://bikejitsu.blogspot.com/2012/08/bike-made-of-9-cardboard-boxes.html

   European    Cycling    Lexicon

The EU Research Framework Programmes (FP7, FP8,…):

The “Seventh Framework Programme” (FP7) (to be followed by FP8 for 2013-2020) is the main financial tool through which the EU supports research and  technological development and demonstration activities, covering almost  all scientific disciplines. Its “cooperation” sub-programme is divided in ten themes (including Transport). One key initiative for cycling projects within the FP7 is CIVITAS. With the CIVITAS Initiative, the EC aims to generate a decisive breakthrough by testing ambitious integrated sustainable urban transport strategies. Through the CIVITAS Initiative the EU also funds the development and evaluation of new approaches to safe cycling in cities.

How to apply: Project proposals submitted in response to the publication of a ‘Call for proposals’ are selected by the European Commission for funding. Calls of the Transport Work Programme will be announced on this page: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/transport/home_en.html

CIVITAS - cleaner and better transport in cities - stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability  - http://www.civitas-initiative.org

http://www.ibike.org/library/statistics-data.htm

Walking and Cycling as transport modes

Of all journeys, 20-40% are travelled by cycle or on foot, with the highest percentage in the Netherlands and the lowest in Finland. Trips on foot take place most frequently in Great Britain, whereas bicycle trips are most frequent in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden [34].Some groups of traffic participants walk or cycle more than others. These differences are also reflected in their crash involvement (see Crash characteristics). Age groups for which walking is particularly important, are children below the age of 12 and adults aged 75 and above. The bicycle is used most frequently by adolescents(12-17yearsold)

...

1.2.2 Cycling as a transport mode

In most countries, a high proportion of people own a bicycle (in Norway, for instance, 70% of adults own a bicycle, in Switzerland, 69% of households own a bicycle). The number of bicycles per 1 000 inhabitants ranges from 52 in the Czech Republic to 1 000 in the Netherlands. What differs considerably from one country to another is the way in which the bicycle is used. Some cyclists use it every day, as a means of transport, while others do so only occasionally [16].Survey data from a selection of seven European countries show that 3-28% of all trips made by cycling, the highest figure being for the Netherlands [34]. For short trips under 5 km, the share of cycling varies from 12% (Finland) to 39% (the Netherlands). The average trip length for cycling is around 3 km in most European countries.

The bicycle is used for short trips to shops and for leisure purposes where the bicycle-tour probably is an aim in itself. However, cycling is also a common way for travelling to work [28]. Between about 30 and 40% of the person kilometres by bicycle is travelled on home-work trips. Home-leisure trips cover about 20-45% of the person kilometres, with the most made in Switzerland and the least in Finland [34].
