Macedonia’s building program aims to make Skopje an attractive tourist destination
Skopje, Macedonia, has been transformed into a majestic Hellenistic Disneyland in recent years, thanks to a neo-classical building program. ![]() A statue of a woman walking a dog stands at the entrance to City Park in Skopje. Nearly every night during the summer, youngsters head to the park to drink, hang out and play music until the early hours of the morning. By: Cody Punter Special to the Star, Published on Thu Jan 28 2016 SKOPJE, MACEDONIA — When an earthquake reduced large parts of Skopje to rubble in July 1963, the central train station survived the devastation, with the hands of its clock tower stuck at the exact time the city began to crumble — 5:17 a.m. Nearly 50 years later, an ambitious attempt to reclaim the classical roots of the country through a grandiose architectural re-envisioning of the city has made it feel less as if the Macedonian capital has been stuck in time, and more like it has been transported back several millennia to when men in togas and leather sandals ruled the world. The neo-classical building program, which began under the watch of current President Gjorge Ivanov in 2010, has seen dozens of drab Communist-era buildings — erected following the earthquake — rebuilt in classical Greek styles replete with robust Corinthian, Doric and Ionic columns and immaculately carved friezes. The city even has a new triumphal arch, which is not dedicated to any victory in particular but rather pivotal moments in the country’s history, such as its 1903 uprising and its separation from Yugoslavia in 1991. The architectural facelift has been complemented by hundreds of new statues depicting anything from ancient historical figures, such as Phillip II and the emperor Justinian, through to contemporary Macedonian politicians, revolutionaries and intellectuals, all the way down to modest representations of common people, such as a woman talking on her cellphone or a homeless man begging on the street. The most impressive of them all is a 22-metre behemoth of Alexander The Great atop a rearing horse with the tip of his sword extended purposefully toward the heavens. Guarded by a team of roaring lions encircling that water fountain below, the bronze incarnation of the former Greek emperor who once ruled half the world is the crowning achievement of Skopje’s gaudy revitalization. While it has attracted international attention, the decision to outfit the capital city with enough bronze and faux-marble to make Nero blush has divided local opinion. Detractors have called it anything from kitsch and over-the-top to historically insensitive, none of which would be entirely inaccurate. Indeed, at times strolling along the river near Macedonia Square can feel like having stepped into a 21st-century Hellenic Disneyland. But in comparison to other ancient heavyweights like Athens or Rome, where the streets are dirty and crowded, and views of the crumbling ruins are blocked either by the scaffolding that is holding them up or tourists brandishing selfie sticks, Skopje’s polished veneer feels refreshing in a grotesque imperial way. While there is no shortage of opinions, Blagoja Varoshanec, who is a curator at the Contemporary Art Museum of Macedonia, says only time will tell whether the new vision of the city is an aberration or a national treasure. “It’s like the Louvre. When they put in the pyramid in the ’60s everyone was negative and upset about it,” he says. “Now it’s a huge tourist attraction.” Indeed one of the arguments in favour of the new incarnation of the city is it would boost tourism. By all accounts the strategy seems to be paying off, with the country witnessing a steady surge of foreign visitors since 2010. “When I was growing up there were only UN missions and soldiers in the streets, now half the people downtown are tourists,” says Varoshanec. The surge in tourism hasn’t come without a cost, though. The price tag for the beautification program has gone from an original estimate of €80 million to more than €500 million. With more than a quarter of the people in the country unemployed, the neo-classical spending spree does not sit well with those who feel the government is ignoring them. “The city is so beautiful, but the people here are so poor,” says Stephane Nikolovski, an unemployed auto-mechanic. While the Hellenistic sprawl has stolen the spotlight in recent years, Skopje still boasts its fair share of authentic historical monuments. Towering above all the pomp and circumstance of Macedonia Square lies the immaculately preserved 6th-century Kale Fortress, which offers an outstanding view of the city. Just a few minutes walk from the entrance to the castle there is a 15th century mosque, as well as the contemporary art, one of several impressive buildings which still bear testament to the city’s Communist-era architecture. Their permanent collection even boasts works by painter Pablo Picasso and sculptor Alexander Calder. There is also a small museum dedicated to missionary Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje. Visitors must also not forget the city’s famous bazaar in Albanian old town, where chic bars, Islamic architecture and traditional markets have drawn backpackers making their way through the Balkans for decades. With such an odd mix of historical monuments and megalomaniacal knockoffs, the local tourism office would do well to adopt the following slogan: Skopje, come for the kitsch, stay for the culture.
